Vikings vs. Packers: Green Bay Shows How Good They Can Be with a Little Defense

Gabe ZaldivarNov 15, 2011

The Packers' perfect record used to hide a dirty little secret. On Monday night, the Packers were in rare form as they were truly a perfect team.

They are deep, versatile and unselfish. Now, if they didn't have to play defense, that would really be something. At least, that was the sentiment prior to the Vikings bashing that took place on Monday Night Football.

Before tonight, the Packers struggled with putting together four quarters of shutdown defense. Monday was even more shocking when you consider the close call the Vikings gave the Packers in Week 7.

At that time, it seemed the Packers' lack of a consistent effort in the secondary would doom them to a guaranteed loss at some point this season.

A few weeks later, the Packers are still ticking. Now, I am not about to anoint the Packers as a great secondary. The issues on the field were shared by the lackluster showing by the Vikings and penalties that piled up.

That being said, these guys are simply unbeatable with even a modicum of defensive effort. Aaron Rodgers was a marvel once again. The Packers star threw 23-of-30 for 250 yards and four touchdowns.

The effort was so good that he earned an early break as Matt Flynn got some reps in. There were a few passes that were delivered with such poise and precision from Rodgers that I shook my head with the understanding that he is playing a different game right now.

We have seen this in other sports. Albert Pujols gets hot and looks like he is going to mash everything he sees. Kobe Bryant is a joy any time he hits the floor.

Aaron Rodgers has become that player you drop all other chores and watch everyone of his games for fear of missing something good.

When he plays at this level, the defense really only need chip in every so often. But when they limit teams like they did the Vikings on Monday, forget it. There is just no beating them.
