Terry Porter Hangs with the Heroes

All I can tell you is this...

Growing up in Portland Oregon in the '80s, we had Superfiends cartoon, GI Joe(s), Transformers, He-Man, Go-Bots, The Uncanny X-Men, and even movies like Robocop and Batman.

NOTHING compared to P-Town's beloved Portland Trail Blazers.

The guys from that team are Portland GODS.

I see Jerome and Cliff a lot (at work) and I have NOTHING but RESPECT for them.  Duckworth died...(bless his soul), and God knows I do nothing but pay my respects to him.

That said; there are TWO Blazers from the 1980s-'90s who DEFIED all childhood mythology and lore:

Clyde Drexler and Terry Porter.

Sorry, but there has NEVER been an '80s cartoon or an NBA athlete who can compare to Drexler and Porter.

Drexler; you had your blessed name hung from the Rose Garden with the rest of the Blazer angels. So spare me while I give credits to Terry Porter.

Terry Porter was a mix between a STONE and a HARD PLACE. Enemy of the team: You tell me what you got stuck between; because odds were that it was Terry Porter.

The only teams to beat Terry Porter in the NBA FINALS were two of the GREATEST teams EVER assembled. The 1990 Pistons, and the 1992 Bulls.

(I understand he had some losses with the Heat and Spurs...but I am talking about Portland.)

The fact it took teams of such caliber to defeat this player, it does not speak to THEIR accomplishment...it speaks to HIS accomplishment.

Terry Porter had his jersey retired tonight, and if I had tears left in his sad world I would have shed them.

What I can say is this, and I will make it sweet, Terry Porter...your name hangs with the ANGELS of Portland Trail Blazer lore, and the ANGELS of life PERIOD.

As for the game, we whooped the Kings in a game that we should have WHUPPED our enemy.

Thursday we face the Suns.

Terry Porter is head coach of the Suns.

My current name for their team is: Grumpy Old Men.

The team seems to be mad at Terry because he wants them in playoff shape to have defensive stops down the stretch. The team feels that the "fun" of their old style of play is gone. Terry has an entire season to deal with Shaq, Nash, and Stoudamire. Terry will figure out what needs to be done...I hope they DO.

That said...

Go Blazers V. Suns.

I will be there on Thursday...

No matter what, I will NEVER forget you.

And no matter what, neither will the city of Portland.
