Boise State Freshmen Make Sporting News' All-Freshman Teams
Tuesday the Sporting News announced its freshmen All-American teams. Three of Boise State's standout freshmen were on the teams.
Starting quarterback Kellen Moore, safety George Iloka, and defensive tackle Billy Winn have played in all 12 games this year, but Winn started in just two mid-season games when called on.
Winn has contributed 23 tackles and two and a half sacks, helping the Broncos stay undefeated. And his play didn't go unnoticed, as he was selected to the magazine's first team.
Moore, the Western Athletic Conference freshman of the year and an All-American, made the second team along with true freshman Iloka.
Iloka’s play makes him truly worthy of his selection. He is fifth on the team in tackles with 56 (six and a half tackles for a loss). He also had four interceptions and his all-around play was second to none.
Moore, Iloka, and Winn are but a few of coach Chris Petersen’s dynamic freshmen crop.
Some of Boise State's young players stepped up to the plate due to injuries. And once thrown into the lion's den, it became clear the lions did not have a chance against them.
Fellow defensive tackle and end Byron Hout was not named to the SN's first or second teams, but certainly his play this year was just as deeply felt.
Hout and Winn together are an imposing force and will be for the next three years. Hout is starting at defensive end Tuesday in the Poinsettia Bowl.
This young team has only begun to rack up the awards.
