Devin Hester Should Be Elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame

Matthew OsborneNov 14, 2011

Former Miami Hurricane and current Chicago Bears playmaker Devin Hester returned his 12th career punt for a touchdown this weekend.  Still, the question looms:  Should Hester be elected into the Hall of Fame based on his special-teams accomplishments alone?

Absolutely.

Hester is only one return short of tying Deion ''Prime Time'' Sanders for the most punt returns for touchdowns in the history of the NFL.  Sanders accomplished this feat in a respectable 188 games, whereas Hester has done so in just 85.

Devin, still pretty young at 29, has a lot of time to either tie or break Sanders record.  It is not a matter of if Hester will break Deion's record, but when.

So to get back to the question at hand, anyone who thinks that Hester should not be elected to the Hall must be delirious.

Mark my words, Hester will go down as the best punt/kick returner in the history of the NFL.  He is simply the best player the position has ever seen; the fact that it's a special-teams position does not diminish it in any way.

Granted, Deion Sanders just so happened to be a standout DB, and this helped to edge his way into the Hall of Fame.  Hester is an average wide receiver at best, and this is why there is such a debate.  Would Sanders have been elected into the Hall of Fame based on special teams alone?

Who knows.

But whether Hester gets elected into the Hall of Fame or not, there is no doubt that he is electrifying.  When a coach chooses to punt the ball to him, literally, they are gambling.  And if you decide to give Hester a chance, odds are he's taking it to the house.

I must admit, I am the first one to boo the television when opposing punters kick the ball out of bounds.  After all, these guys are professionals.  They get paid extravagant sums of money to play football.  Put your money where your mouth is and tackle him.  There is no need to deny him the ball.

If the opponents are as good as they think they are, then Hester wouldn't be one touchdown away from owning the record.  He is truly something special and these types of players don't come around often.
