College Football: Your Beloved Houston Cougars Are Overrated

Baily DeeterNov 13, 2011

Let's face it. As much as we love Houston, Boise State, TCU, and the mid-major powers, you have to admit; these teams are overrated.

Case Keenum has even raised some eyebrows with his eye-popping performances, often leading Houston to 70+ plus points in overpowering C-USA victories. And this isn't the first time Houston has stepped up.

But can we really say these Cougars deserve a BCS bid when they have only played one quality opponent, and that was 5-5 UCLA? When they needed a life-saving comeback to beat mediocre Louisiana Tech, and a big day from Keenum to overcome UCLA.

Nobody expected Houston to be here. And, to be honest, when I saw Houston up high in the rankings, I was surprised, even though Keenum is anchoring the offense.

Houston still has to play two of Conference USA's best teams, SMU and Tulsa, and likely Southern Miss if they can make their way to the conference championship game. For once, the C-USA has more than the Liberty Bowl on the line.

Keenum and co. have even brought College GameDay to Houston for Saturday's tilt at SMU, but can we really say all the hype was deserved?

If you look closely into Houston's first and third games, against UCLA and Louisiana Tech, you'll see Houston needed Case Keenum at his best (or at least for parts of the game), and that they struggled to put up points (for their standards) and they struggled.

When Keenum struggles (against real competition), the whole team goes down. Even against Louisiana Tech, the Cougars took a long time to pick up the pace (before a miraculous win).

Now, when Houston faces C-USA competition (6-4, 7-3 teams), and if they make it to the conference championship, (BCS) No. 20 Southern Miss.

But if Houston makes it to the BCS, will the bowls be spoiled for the other mid-major teams? If Case Keenum feels the wrath of the SEC and the power conferences, then will one BCS game be negated for the audience?

We can let the Cougars into the BCS, and we can let them take down the C-USA and look like superstars. And while Boise State and TCU may have deserved more, playing a few power teams and blowing out everyone else, C-USA is weaker.

So Houston is back. Case Keenum has returned, but have the Cougars really earned this right?

Ask the BCS.
