Rex Ryan: Coach's Antics Will Lead to Destruction of Jets Playoff Hopes

Andrew KulhaNov 13, 2011

They say that a football team takes on the personality of it's head coach, which means that the New York Jets are essentially screwed.

Their head coach Rex Ryan is arguably one of the most obnoxious, self-centered, and annoying individuals in all of sports, so of course his team takes after him.

That's all fine and dandy though. Teams aren't graded on their attitude, so the Jets don't have a problem there.

Where they do have a problem is focus.

They don't have the ability to take things to the next level, as was shown in the previous two seasons where they lost in the AFC Championship game.

The Jets are a whole lot of talk, but they have a very hard time walking the walk, and that's all on their coach.

Sure, if he came out and said: "You know what, we're going to be a top team in this league and be a force in the playoffs," then the Jets would be golden.

They've had their up's and down's this season, but there is no doubting that they are one of the better teams this season.

Ryan didn't just come out and say that though. Here is what Ryan had to say before the season even started, according to Jenny Vrentas of The Star-Ledger on NJ.com

"

Rex Ryan stepped to a podium in the stadium where Super Bowl XLVI is scheduled to be played in less than a year, and — surprise — issued another championship guarantee for next season.

If there is a next season, of course.

“I believe this is the year that we’re going to win the Super Bowl,” the Jets coach said at Lucas Oil Stadium during the annual Scouting Combine. “I thought we’d win it the first two years. I guarantee we’ll win it this year.”

"

This was before the season started mind you.

This was before the defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers were 8-0 and dominating the league. This was before the Bengals, Ravens and Steelers were all 6-3 in their division.

Most importantly, this was before the Buffalo Bills shocked the AFC and are tied with the Jets and Patriots at 5-3 during Week 10.

The Jets may not even make the playoffs, let alone win the Super Bowl, and the disappointment will be on their coach.

He set them up with his cocky words and laissez faire attitude.

He set them up with the pressure of a must-win Super Bowl, before the season had even begun, and now his team is going to have to eat the words that he threw out there.

Ryan was irresponsible with his words, and now his team is going to pay the price for it.
