7 Teams, Players and Storylines We're Sick of Having Stuffed Down Our Throats

John HickeyNov 13, 2011

In an era with a 24/7 sports media cycle, it is only inevitable that fans are subjected to coverage of the same players, teams and storylines ad nauseam.

Whether it's the daily Tim Tebow watch or the Andrew Luck sweepstakes, stories that were once fresh and exciting have grown boring and stale, making American sports fans collectively roll their eyes.

Here are seven players, teams and general football storylines fans are sick of hearing about repeatedly.

All Tebow, All the Time

1 of 7

The Broncos have spent most of the two seasons dancing around the issue of starting Tim Tebow at quarterback or mostly (until lately) having him stand on the sidelines.

OK, he’s starting. And despite questions about his arm, he's 3-1 as a starter for a last-place Broncos' squad.

But until he does something amazing, or does so little that he’s replaced, enough with the endless Tebow stories already.

The Myths of Tony Romo and Cowboys

2 of 7

No one is going to argue that Tony Romo isn’t a decent quarterback.

Similarly, you won’t get much pushback that the Cowboys can mostly hold their own in the NFL.

But he isn’t a great quarterback (Sunday’s show notwithstanding), and they aren’t a great team.

Mostly, we’re tired of hearing anything about the Cowboys because of their stadium (that story is so old) or because of their owner (Jerry Jones is that old, too).

The Cowboys are always huge in Dallas; just ask the Texas Rangers. They aren’t America’s team (small "t") though.

Vick, the Eagles and the Controversies That Never End

3 of 7

Any chance that Michael Vick could be just another NFL quarterback ended when he was convicted for his role in a dog fighting ring and spent time in the slammer.

Now he’s subjected to scrutiny that other quarterbacks aren’t– quarterback controversies, health and injury issues, radio show problems, nude pictures, and the like.

The thing is, what we care about is good football, and quarterbacks for teams with losing records just shouldn’t generate the number of headlines that Vick does.

The Raiders and Their Fans

4 of 7

This is probably one of the longest running story lines in the NFL.

Yes, the Raiders have a history of fans who like to mix it up.

But that boorish behavior that we see now at the improbably named O.Co Coliseum is a holdover from the great Raiders teams and the blue collar Oakland fans that were legendary before the move to Los Angeles.

The Raiders haven’t completely recovered that pre-move feeling, and it’s now kind of boring.

Andrew Luck and the 2012 Draft

5 of 7

Every losing team this season has been thrown into the Andrew Luck Derby, as if the Stanford quarterback is a lock to be the No. 1 pick in the next draft.

Hey, he’s pretty good, Saturday’s implosion at home against Oregon notwithstanding.

But he’s still in college, and whether he winds up as the first pick in the draft, much less whether he winds up in Indianapolis, Miami, St. Louis, Arizona, Jacksonville or Minnesota, are stories for another day.

The Quality of the Packers Offense

6 of 7

There’s no question that the Green Bay Packers can put up points with the best of them.

And in quarterback Aaron Rodgers, they have one of the true artisans of the game.

But before we put Green Bay’s offense up with the best of all time, perhaps we should consider that the Packers haven’t played a particularly strong schedule.

They lead the NFL in offense, but they've done it doing what they should do, beating up mostly mediocre teams.

The Power of the Ravens Defense

7 of 7

There’s a lot to like about the Baltimore defense.

Who doesn’t believe that Ray Lewis is as good a linebacker as the game currently owns?

But do we have to hear about it all the time?

After all, it’s been a decade since the Ravens won their only Super Bowl. You have to wonder why, if the Baltimore defense is that great, the Ravens haven’t won more.
