Sean Lee Is the Best Defensive Player on the Cowboys (Outside of DeMarcus Ware)

Manik AggarwalNov 16, 2011

In 2010, the Dallas Cowboys had a formidable duo of middle linebackers in Keith Brooking and Bradie James. They were team captains, solid tacklers and leaders for the Dallas defense.

In the 2010 draft, Jerry Jones decided to draft Sean Lee, a four-year starter at Linebacker U, also known as Penn State University. Cowboys’ fans and many media members thought this was a strange pick considering the many glaring holes the Cowboys had on their team.

Needless to say, just 18 months later, it is clear that Jerry Jones made a beautiful pick with Sean Lee.

He has proven to be a huge playmaker while leading the team in interceptions, a solid tackler leading the team in tackles and an absolute stud in the middle of the field. He is great against the run and the pass, has taken over leadership duties and the starting position from Brooking and has played like a warrior.

It was just 10 days ago that he dislocated his wrist; while missing just one game against his will, he was back in action against the Buffalo Bills this past weekend.

Sean Lee’s best asset is that he has the “it” factor on defense. He always knows were the ball is, makes the plays necessary to win the game and simply is a game-changer.

When Troy Polamalu was drafted out of USC, these were the characteristics that made him so appealing to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Polamalu has been everything as advertised and then some.

While I do not think Sean Lee will ever have that kind of impact, that hairstyle or that many moments of SportsCenter’s Top 10, he will remain a vital player in any success the Cowboys have.

Sean Lee has proven to be one of those draft picks that Jerry has gotten right.

Most importantly, he provides that energy and youth to a Dallas defense that often gets complacent with big leads or gets discouraged with a few bad plays. His stability is the perfect complement to the eccentric Rob Ryan.

Look for Sean Lee to continue to get better and remain a defensive stalwart for the Dallas Cowboys for years to come.
