Oregon vs. Stanford: Blowout Loss Proves the Cardinal Are BCS Pretenders

Austin GreenNov 13, 2011

I've been skeptical about Stanford all year long, and Oregon proved me right by beating down the Cardinal 53-30 on Saturday.

They were 9-0 coming into Saturday's game, but it wasn't difficult to see that their unblemished record was a fluke.

Sure, their offensive numbers are impressive. But anybody can drop 40 points on teams like Duke, Colorado and Washington State.

Stanford has only beaten one good team this season (USC) and it took them three overtimes to do it.

Andrew Luck is the best quarterback in the nation, but this media love affair with him has gotten ridiculous.

Commentators drool over him every chance they get. If I hear Kirk Herbstreit or Brent Musburger compliment him after another interception, I might shoot myself in the face.

Obviously, most of the props thrown his way are justified. The kid is an unbelievable talent and should be a beast in the NFL.

But for all his glory, he can't mask that atrocious Cardinal defense.

Stanford has faced two BCS-caliber offenses in Oregon and USC, and their defense has been shredded each time. The Trojans put up 48 points on them back in October, and the Ducks made them look like a bunch of high schoolers.

LaMichael James was breaking ankles all over the field on his way to an easy 146 yards and three touchdowns.

The sheer presence of Luck will get Stanford a BCS bid, but as a team, they don't deserve it.

Unless they face the Big Ten or Big East representative, the Cardinal won't have any BCS success this season.
