Pacquiao vs Marquez Rematch: Why a Fourth Bout Will Never Happen

Austin GreenNov 13, 2011

Promoter Bob Arum says he wants to immediately set up Pacquiao-Marquez IV, but the fourth installment will never happen.

After yet another controversial Pacquiao victory, Arum said in the post-fight interview that a fourth bout between these two needs to occur.

However, I'm pretty sure this proclamation was nothing more than a jab at Floyd Mayweather.

Ever since their falling out several years ago, Arum and Mayweather haven't exactly been best buddies. And when Mayweather reserved the MGM Grand for May 5, presumably to fight Pacquiao, Arum took offense.

He called the move a "joke" and said that Mayweather's camp had "some Mickey Mouse agenda," whatever that means.

So when Arum announced in the ring that he wants to work on Pacquiao-Marquez IV, he was really using a public opportunity to spite Mayweather.

Besides, the world doesn't need another fight between Pacquiao and Marquez. The trilogy was thrilling and controversial, but we know what we're getting from these two.

Marquez's style is problematic for Pacquiao, so Pac-Man will struggle. But his flashy style and aggressive tendencies are more judge-friendly, so he'll win on points.

There's nothing these two could possibly do to make the fourth fight different than the first three.

What the sport and the fans need is Pacquiao vs. Mayweather. It seems like all the setbacks that were preventing this fight from happening have been resolved.

Now Arum just needs to stay out of the way and let the world's two best boxers step into the ring together.
