Felix Jones Should Never Play for the Dallas Cowboys Again

Manik AggarwalNov 13, 2011

Everything Felix Jones was meant to be is what DeMarco Murray is.

He was supposed to be a big play threat. He was supposed to be a game changer. He was supposed to allow Romo to efficiently use the screen pass, work the play action and play off of his skills to better utilize the wide receivers.

Oh, and he was supposed to be healthy, considering his clean slate throughout his days at Arkansas.

In 41 career games for the Dallas Cowboys, he has rushed for 2004 yards on 394 carries, making a pretty solid 5.1 yards per carry. In that time, he has nine total touchdowns, which is entirely unacceptable.

Whether he is the lead back or the backup, getting in the red zone about once every four games is not being the playmaker, big-threat or decoy that he was drafted to be.

I certainly do not think that DeMarco Murray can keep up this ridiculous pace he is on. His numbers and production are off the charts over the last couple of games. It has been eerily similar to Miles Austin’s string of weeks back in 2008, which made Cowboys fans nostalgic about Michael Irvin.

Murray has played eight total games this season, four of which while he has been the lead horse for the Dallas offensive attack. Over those games, he has rushed 80 times for 539 yards, averaging 6.7 yards per carry.

More importantly, he runs the offense very well, blocks the blitz, has the trust of Romo and has made at least one significant impact play in each of the games he has played while he has been the starter.

It is clear that DeMarco Murray needs to remain the lead back for the Dallas Cowboys. Felix Jones has had his opportunities many times, and has continued to drop the ball, get injured or simply not make the plays necessary to win the game.

For these reasons, Felix Jones should not start for the Cowboys again, and it would be wise to put him on the trading block this offseason.
