Georgia Football: Grading Bulldogs Game vs. Auburn Tigers

Brian JonesNov 13, 2011

The end of the season is near and this is where good teams play their best football.

It looks like the Georgia Bulldogs are becoming a very good team, because they seem to be playing better as the season rolls on.

They did everything right against Auburn, and as a result, they came away with a huge win in Athens.

In fact, this was probably the best they have played when it comes to balanced offensive, defensive and special teams play.

So here are some grades for the Bulldogs in their win over the Tigers Saturday, and trust me when I say these are grades the Bulldogs want to show their parents.

Quarterback: A+

1 of 8

Out of all the games quarterback Aaron Murray has played for Georgia, this may have been his best.

He completed 14 of his 18 pass attempts, tallied 224 yards and four touchdowns in the win against the Tigers.

Murray now holds the UGA record for most touchdown passes with 27, breaking Matthew Stafford's record of 25.

Did I also mention it was his birthday last week?

Running Backs: A+

2 of 8

Carlton Thomas and Isaiah Crowell were suspended last week, and that could have been a good thing, because both players came out on fire against Auburn.

Crowell rushed for a career-high 132 yards and one touchdown  while Carlton Thomas rushed for 127 yards on 15 carries.

As a team, the Bulldogs rushed for 304 yards—a season best.

Recievers: A

3 of 8

Michael Bennett and Malcolm Mitchell are only freshmen, but they are playing like they are seniors, continuing to make play after play each game.

Bennett had a diving touchdown catch (which is in the running for UGA play of the year), and Malcolm Mitchell looked healthy after missing the last month with a hamstring injury. Mitchell had three catches for 85 yards and one touchdown.

Tavarres King also had a touchdown grab, as did fullback Bruce Figgins.

Offensive Line: A

4 of 8

The entire offensive line played huge in the win against Auburn, opening holes all day for Crowell and Thomas, and able to keep Aaron Murray upright.

Ben Jones looked as strong as ever and Kenarious Gates has done good work filling in for Dallas Lee.

The offensive line is a big as any line in college, or NFL, effectively using their size to plow through opposing defenses.

Defensive Line: A+

5 of 8

Like the offensive line, the defensive line is getting better with each game.

Abry Jones had 1.5 sacks, DeAngelo Tyson had another strong game, and John Jenkins also played well with three tackles and one tackle for a loss.

Last year, the line had their issues, as they did not have the right personnel. Now they have the right players in each spot, and the Bulldogs are thriving.

Linebackers: A+

6 of 8

Before the season, I said the Bulldogs linebackers could be the best in the SEC.

Alabama may have something to say about that, but the Bulldogs are not far behind.

Alec Ogletree had six tackles and one forced fumble, while Jarvis Jones tallied two sacks to remain the SEC leader.

Those two alone are scary, but when Christian Robinson and Cornelius Washington are making plays as well, it's tough for any offense to make plays.

Defensive Backs: A

7 of 8

Due to the front seven's outstanding play, the defensive backs were able to make some game-changing plays.

Bacarri Rambo had a huge interception, returning it for a second quarter touchdown.

Brandon Boykin and Shawn Williams were making plays in the backfield, and Sanders Commings had a near interception for a touchdown.

The secondary is much-improved from last season and it's because they each knows their assignments and duties.

Special Teams: A

8 of 8

Coach Mark Richt decided to put more starters on kickoff coverage, and it has worked. The Auburn return team could never get anything going—something fans love to hear.

Also, Brandon Bogotay nailed a 26-yard field goal and Blair Walsh was solid on kickoffs.

This effort was much needed because there was (and still is) huge issues with special teams across the board.
