Penn State Scandal: 3 Things the School Needs To Do Right Now

William PenfieldNov 13, 2011

Amidst the scandal involving former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky allegedly molesting boys in the Penn State football facilities, the school seemed to waste no time ousting Joe Paterno but have taken their time making other important decisions.

One move the school needs to make right now is to fire assistant coach Mike McQueary, who allegedly saw Sandusky molesting a boy in the Penn State showers and did not report it to the authorities.

They took a step in the right direction when they banned him from the field for the game on Saturday and then placed him on administrative leave, but they need to take it one step further and relieve him of his duties. The fact that he witnessed these acts and did not report it to the authorities means that he didn't do everything he could have to stop Sandusky and he deserves the same fate as Paterno.

To go along with McQueary, the university needs to clean house in its football program.

A football staff is a very tight knit group and spend most of their hours together in the football facilities, so it is likely that Paterno and McQueary were not the only ones that knew of Sandusky's actions.

Interim head coach Tom Bradley has been at the university since 1979. No matter how nice of a guy he seems in his interviews and press conferences right now, it is hard for me to believe that he didn't have the slightest clue as to what was going on.

The best move for the university is to relieve the entire coaching staff of their duties and start clean to rid themselves of any staff that could have known about Sandusky's actions in the football facilities.

Cleaning house would, of course, mean that Penn State would need to hire a new coach and that should be done sooner rather than later.

The fact that they are allowing McQueary and the other members of the coaching to still be employed by the university when they could have known what Sandusky was doing, is just plain wrong and a potential slap in the face to the victims.

Whether it be Urban Meyer, Jon Gruden or whoever, Penn State should reach out to a coach soon to try and replace the staff currently running the football team.

Lastly, the university needs to make the special committee's investigation into what went on a priority. It is understandable that it may take time for everything to come out, but there is no reason that this investigation shouldn't be the No. 1 priority of the university right now. They need to find out what happened and they need to find out sooner rather than later so they can punish the appropriate people.

The university is truly in a tough place and it is not an easy situation to deal with, but as of right now they have not done all that they can to make this right.
