Manny Pacquiao: Pac-Man's Next Fight Must Be Against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Zachary D. RymerNov 13, 2011

Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the fight that every boxing fan wants to see. Come to think of it, it's the fight that all sports fans want to see, no matter how much they care about boxing.

And now is the time to make it happen. Money Mayweather has already said he wants it to happen, and Pac-Man agreed after narrowly defeating Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday night.

"Let's get it on," Pacquiao said of the Mayweather fight, per ESPN.com's Dan Rafael. "Let's make the fight happen and give the people a good fight."

For the first time in what seems like forever, the vibes surrounding the bout to end all bouts are good. Money wants it to happen, Pac-Man wants it to happen and the world at large has been wanting it to happen for years.

I want to beg for both sides to make it happen, but the truth is that I really shouldn't have to. Honestly, it's actually rather easy to believe the idea that both fighters truly want this fight.

For Pac-Man, Mayweather is the only logical opponent among the list of fighters he could take on next. You have the obvious ultimate competition dynamic, and more important than that you have the money dynamic. If this fight actually happens, both fighters are going to be stuffed to the gills with cash for the rest of their days.

Concerning Mayweather, now is the time for him to stop ducking Pac-Man. Presumably, he saw the same thing that the rest of us saw on Saturday night: a very beatable Manny Pacquiao. As Rafael put it in his column, Money "ought to be licking his chops."

This is a fight that was going to be huge for both fighters' legacies no matter what. This is true now more than ever. Mayweather needs to fight and beat Pac-Man in order to validate his perfect 42-0 record, and Pac-Man needs to fight and beat Mayweather in order to prove beyond a doubt that he is the baddest fighter on the planet.

This fight has looked like a pipe dream; one that's always in sight, yet always out of reach. Things are different at the moment. The dust from Pac-Man's last bout has not yet settled, but this fight is already in sight.

And for once, it's in reach.
