UFC on Fox 1 Results: Ben Henderson Is the Man to Dethrone Frankie Edgar

Dale De SouzaNov 13, 2011

Frankie Edgar, meet your new dance partner.

Fifteen exciting minutes with a game Clay Guida was all Ben Henderson needed to cement his status as not only the winner of his bout at the UFC's debut on Fox, but also as the undisputed new No. 1 contender to the UFC Lightweight Champion and his throne.

Henderson threw everything he could throw at Guida, and had it been any other fighter, half of what he threw at Guida would have led to either a submission victory or a TKO victory.

Instead, Guida weathered the storm and summoned his own combination of lightning and thunder to try and topple Henderson, but Henderson proved too strong, too calm and just too good for Guida to overcome.

Give Guida his due because he wanted to give Henderson a fight and he did just that, but never question whether Henderson was more the aggressor in the fight than Guida, because even if by a slight, Henderson proved more aggressive than Guida on this night.

Now it officially stands that Edgar really might be the only guy with reason to fight Henderson these days, considering that very few fighters possess any of the tools needed to beat Henderson in 2011, but is he really the only guy that could shut Henderson down, or is this realistically a shot Edgar doesn't need to take, considering that many will write Henderson off as a "too much, too soon" case?

Edgar, being the Toms River wrestling standout he's been, complete with his wrestling and jiu-jitsu training, has yet to avoid taking shots that he didn't need to take, and that's referring to his opponents as well as the actual punches he's been hit with.

However, he's never taken a shot against a guy like Henderson, who might not be too doctorate-leveled in "The Sweet Science", but can definitely put Edgar away with whatever he darn well pleases.

In Henderson, the champ will stand across the cage this upcoming February in Japan opposite a bigger, yet more freakishly threatening version of himself, and when fans see Henderson in the cage, they will understand that Henderson's cardio and his offense were tailor-made to combat Edgar's equally aggressive offense.

Both men have the heart of a champion and both men are difficult to finish, but it might just take the power of Henderson to show the world that Edgar is a great talent, but one that is undersized for the 155-pound division as we proceed into 2012.

Of course, Edgar can always prove us all wrong as he did against BJ Penn and Gray Maynard recently, but while Henderson might be a big lightweight, the gas tank and persistent submission game of the former WEC Lightweight Champion could reveal itself as the kryptonite that not only slows down the champ, but also serves as the solution to the question of how to stop the Jersey Shore kid that the MMA World calls "The Answer".
