Pacquiao vs. Marquez Undercard: Alvarado Illustrates Dominance vs. Prescott
American Mike Alvarado kept his undefeated record alive with a 10th-round TKO of Breidis Prescott on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez's third meeting. Mile High moves to 32-0 with the victory.
It wasn't the prettiest win of his career by any means.
Through the first four or five rounds, Prescott controlled the bout with an aggressive approach which appeared to catch Alvarado off guard and forced him to persevere some heavy shots.
However, as the match wore on, Prescott appeared to run out of steam after using so much energy in an attempt to knock Alvarado out early. That allowed the 31-year-old Denver native to regain his bearings and start landing his own combinations.
Alvarado entered the fight a sizable favorite (-450), according to the oddsmakers, so it wasn't a major surprise he turned the fight around. The manner in which he did it was impressive, though.
It takes a lot of stamina to endure a beating for so long and still manage to turn things around. Even though he's not a widely acknowledged name in the welterweight division, he does hold the IBF Latino Light Welterweight and WBC Continental Americas Light Welterweight titles.
And it's hard to ignore an unbeaten professional record after more than 30 trips to the ring. Managing to avoid any unlucky judges' decisions or bad nights is something few boxers can do, regardless of competition level.
Working his way onto a card that also includes Pacquiao is an accomplishment in itself, and shows that people are starting to take notice of Alvarado's awesome run.
While he'll never be a worldwide phenomenon like Pac-Man, or anything remotely close to that, Alvarado is starting to carve out a nice niche for himself and could continue to make appearances on strong pay-per-view undercards.
And for somebody who started his career at the Radisson Graystone Castle in Thornton, Colo. seven years ago, that's not too shabby.
