I Hate Ken Dorsey

I have been waiting for this for seven years.

Which is why I enjoyed watching last night's Eagles game, in which the Birds kept their playoff hopes alive with a win over the visiting Browns by a score of 30-10.

Why the disdain for Dorsey, Cleveland's third-string quarterback? It stems back to his days with the Miami Hurricanes. He was the quarterback for one of the most talented college football teams prior to the USC resurgence.

Guys like Clinton Portis, Jeremey Shockey, Andre Johnson, Frank Gore, Ed Reed, Philip Buchanon, and Jonathan Vilma provided "The U" with one of the most fearsome rosters in the sport of college football in 2001 (they also had Jerome McDougle), and they entered that season with motivation to prove themselves after being shut out of the BCS championship game the year before.

Their first game of the season was at Penn State, who may not have had a great team (an ugly 5-6 record) but the first game was the official return of Adam Taliaferro, as he lead the team out of the tunnel following his recovery from a devastating spinal cord injury the previous season at Ohio State.

All of the warm and fuzzy feelings quickly were dismantled as Dorsey and company obliterated the Zack Mills squad 33-7 and jumped to first place in the polls the following week.

With all of the success Miami had that season en route to a national championship it was Dorsey who was heralded as a big time quarterback and for some reason became one of the prominent faces of the team. Never mind the fact that he was surrounded by great talent who would make a bigger impact on the NFL than he ever would, right?

Dorsey could do no wrong against Penn State, or almost anyone else for that matter in college.

What really irked me was the following season as Miami was looking to repeat as national champions. Dorsey was once again at the helm and was receiving Heisman attention.

I still do not totally agree with the logic there, especially when Kenny Jackson mentioned in a West Coast broadcast that Dorsey would be his pick to win the trophy because of his great college career and that he deserves it for everything he had done. Way off base.

The Heisman is an award for an individual season, not a college career. Thankfully the voters saw it my way and awarded the trophy to Carson Palmer of USC. Following that, Dorsey and the Hurricanes lost in double overtime to Ohio State in the BCS championship game (probably because they weren't an SEC team, but that's another story for another time).

Dorsey went on to enter the NFL draft and was picked in the seventh round with the 241st pick by the San Francisco 49ers. Things never worked out for Dorsey in San Francisco and it has not gotten much better in Cleveland.

I don't mean to kick an over-hyped college quarterback turned career third string quarterback down too much, but I hate him. I hate him because he went to Miami. I hate him because he was overhyped in college.

I hate him because he beat Penn State. I got much joy out of watching the Eagles force him to go 11 for 28 with a pair of interceptions (one of which was returned for a touchdown) and come withing some stickum on the gloves of having another two interceptions.

Where is Dorsey's next stop on the horrid backup express?
