UFC on Fox Results: Can Junior Dos Santos Clear out the Heavyweight Division?

Matthew HemphillNov 12, 2011

Junior dos Santos did tonight what he does best.

He kept the fight standing, and in doing so, put his opponent on the ground and out of the fight.

It took dos Santos only a little over a minute to dispatch Cain Velasquez and become the new UFC heavyweight champion.  Now the question is, can he keep it?

It may be only minutes after dos Santos' title reign, but fight fans have always been an inquisitive bunch, and the only question many might ask is, who is next?

Dos Santos has already cut a swath through the division just to get to the title, and by downing Velasquez, has taken out a decent chunk of it.  There are always new challenges to meet though.

The obvious thoughts go to the winner of Lesnar-Overeem fight at UFC 141, and though they should as Dana White has claimed that is the victor's next opponent, but their are still other people out there.

Injuries occur, and though the Lesnar-Overeem winner should take the slot as the next opponent for the title, nothing is guaranteed, and in truth, it would be okay.

There are other opponents out there for the young Brazilian boxer such as former Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Frank Mir, Antonio Nogueira if he wins another fight and Josh Barnett, if he can keep himself from pissing Dana White off, are all possible opponents.

And that is the tip of the iceberg.

As for dos Santos' ability to dispatch them?

It seems like "Cigano" can do anything as long as the fight stays on its feet.  It's not so certain what happens if the fight is taken to the ground.

That is what makes his next fight so interesting though.

If Lesnar wins, it will obviously be a match against a talented, large wrestler, in which we might see a repeat of Velasquez or something entirely different.

If Overeem wins the fight in December, then we will see two elite strikers take each other on and find if dos Santos' boxing is superior to Overeem's kickboxing.

And the answer fans get from either of those fights will give them a clearer picture of the question of whether or not dos Santos can run through the division.

Fans won't know for a while, but if tonight was a litmus test, either way it will be exciting.
