Velasquez vs. Dos Santos Results: New Heavyweight Champ Is a Bad Man

Zachary D. RymerNov 12, 2011

If I didn't know any better, I'd say Junior dos Santos has places to be tonight. He certainly didn't seem very interested in staying very long at UFC on FOX.

In case you missed it, dos Santos finished his heavyweight championship bout against Cain Velasquez in timely fashion. As a matter of fact, barely a minute had gone by in the first round when dos Santos introduced Velasquez's face to his right fist.

Upon being introduced to dos Santos' fist, Velasquez slumped to the floor. The soon-to-be former heavyweight champ managed one dazed look up at dos Santos before his challenger was upon him. Dos Santos connected with a few more blows before Velasquez's head went limp.

The fight ended after one minute and four seconds. Next time you come across Junior dos Santos, be sure to address him as the UFC Heavyweight Champion.

There are going to be people who dispute dos Santos' claim to the championship. Sure, he won his belt via a very convincing knockout, but that's understandable seeing as how Velasquez hadn't set foot in the Octagon since last October. What we saw was a brutal beating, yes, but it was also a clear-cut case of a great fighter with a serious case of ring rust.

Maybe so. But when I look at dos Santos right now, I can't call him a fluke. In fact, I can't even bring myself to associate him with the word.

Make no mistake about it, dos Santos is 100 percent legit. We're talking about a dude who has now won nine fights in a row, and who is standing on a mountain of experience that few other heavyweights can match. His career has been building towards a belt, and now he has one.

As if that wasn't enough, he just beat Velasquez like he stole something. Seeing as how Velasquez was last seen beating Brock Lesnar to a bloody pulp, that dos Santos was able to rob him of his consciousness in such rapid fashion strikes me as being rather impressive.

So say whatever you will about Velasquez and ring rust—I only ask that you concede one point:

That Junior dos Santos is a baaaad man.
