Clay Guida is a major fan favorite, and he showed why in this great matchup with Ben Henderson. But Henderson proved that he is more than a fan favorite—he is a force to be reckoned with and is headed for a title shot with Frankie Edgar.
This bout featured great ground work; Guida nearly tapped Henderson out late in the final round, but he was able to escape and secure the unanimous decision. Henderson had controlled the fight and landed the more telling blows throughout the fight.
Guida always makes the fight spectacular. His hard charging style won't let the fight go any other way. That is why fans love him so much, and this night was no exception. Even as the decision was being announced, Guida bounced in anticipation, even after the three grueling rounds he had fought.
He and the crowd chanting his name were disappointed.
Henderson was just a better all-around fighter. Henderson showed nearly the entire bag of tricks, with elements of his Taekwondo background rearing its head as well. The former WEC champion has more than made his mark in the UFC—and that is why he is headed for a title shot.
He has been so impressive, many have him already as the favorite over current champion Edgar. Edgar wowed us in his battles with Grey Maynard, and now his next challenge awaits. Judging from what we just saw from Henderson, the challenge will be a substantial one.
