College Football Scores: Michigan State's Win Will Push Them to Front of Big Ten
The Michigan State Spartans are on a roll, having won six of their last seven games. With today's 37-21 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Spartans are in position to stay atop the Big Ten Legends division, which will put them in the Big Ten championship game.
Leading the Big Ten, the Spartans likely have the Rose Bowl within their reach, but they will need to capitalize on all chances to capture that spot.
With only Northwestern and Indiana remaining on the schedule, it is hard to imagine the Spartans falling off anytime soon. Following Saturday's win, that is how things will look for the Spartans from here on out.
Big Ten Implications
The Spartans are controlling their own destinies.
If they can manage to pull off an easy home victory over Indiana next week and follow that up with a road victory over Northwestern, the Spartans will find themselves in the Big Ten championship game.
The Spartans would then face off against whoever wins the Big Ten Leaders division, which could be either Wisconsin or Penn State.
The Spartans have yet to play the Nittany Lions this season, but they did defeat the Badgers 37-31 at home. If this is the final matchup in the Big Ten, it will be giving the Spartans a competitve advantage.
BCS Implications
The Spartans are in a great position, considering that they are 8-2 with wins over many ranked teams.
Sitting in the No. 17 spot, many would assume that the Spartans are going to make a jump in the rankings. They will not enter the Top Five, but they do have a chance to crack the Top 10 if they finish the season 11-2, with that 11th victory coming in the Big Ten championship.
The Spartans' best route to glory would be winning the Big Ten championship, which would give them an automatic bid to the Rose Bowl.
If the Spartans do make the Rose Bowl, they will be likely matched up against either the Oregon Ducks or Stanford Cardinal. Both games would be a real challenge for the Spartans, but they are definitely living up to their early season potential.
