Most Overrated Teams Of 2008

Georgia

Ranked No. 1 preseason. During the summer, Moreno and Stafford sucked up more glossy newsprint than Brad and Angie. Expectations in Athens had never been higher. Then came the September 27th game against Alabama: Saturday night, ABC, blackout, between the hedges.

It may turn out to be the last blackout between the hedges. Alabama was ahead 93-0 midway through the first quarter. I don't recall a home crowd being so pumped up for a game, and then so deflated, so fast.

November 1st against Florida came a chance at redemption. That ended on the second play of the game as Brandon Spikes pancaked Moreno to the ground and told him nose to nose what he thought about his mother. They should have drawn a chalkline around Knowshon—and the Dawg's season—after that hit.

Their season ended on a complete downer, giving up 45 points at home to Georgia Tech.

Hey, at least Richt kept his job.

LSU

Reigning National Champs were ranked No. 7 preseason. They got absolutely walloped by Florida and Georgia, then closed with embarrassing losses to Ole Miss and Arkansas. Almost lost at home to Troy.

My guess is Les Miles is just a .500 season away from getting canned.

Auburn

Tigers were ranked No. 10 preseason, chock full of returning senior and excited about their new spread offense. It didn't quite work out. They couldn't score two touchdowns in a game even if they were on the field by themselves.

Bye, bye, Tubbs. Some lucky team is going to get a really good coach.

Tennesse

At this point I guess it's getting kind of obvious which conference was the most overrated? (Hint. It's not the Big 12.)

It's hard to believe these guys were ranked No. 18 preseason. Lost to UCLA. Lost to Wyoming. Lost Fulmer. 'Nuff said. Do you think Eric Berry wishes he was playing elsewhere? Can he play quarterback?

Clemson

This team was ranked No. 9 preseason. Obliterated by Alabama in week one, whereupon they were tossed unceremoniously out of the top 25, never to return. Salvaged a 7-5 season, beat the Gamecocks and made the Gator Bowl after pulling the plug on Bowden.

West Virginia

Ranked No. 8 preseason. Pat White, one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, was back for a senior season on a team that came within a couple of plays of knocking LSU out of the championship game. Going to be a contender, right? Wrong. Lost to East Carolina and yep, Pittsburgh....again.

Arizona State

This team finished 10-3 last year, and was ranked No. 15 preseason. If they had beat Georgia, they would have been ranked in the top 10 going into the USC game. That may have been the extra quality win USC needed to get into the NC game discussion.

At 5-7, the Sun Devils are a symbol of why the Trojans didn't get to play for the title this year.
