Week 10 Fantasy Football Projections: Players Sure to Cost You a Win

Alex HallNov 12, 2011

Every game is crucial when it comes to fantasy football. There's always pride and bragging rights on the line. And we now find ourselves just a month away from the fantasy postseason.

At this point in the season, wins mean more than ever, and any players who fail to produce on Sunday (or Monday) in a given week can cost you a victory.

Here are five players who could cost you a crucial win this week if you choose to start them.

Brandon Jacobs

1 of 5

Brandon Jacobs looked like the old bruiser fantasy owners loved back in the mid-2000s and put up some solid numbers against the New England Patriots, but don't expect a repeat performance against the San Francisco 49ers.

San Fran boasts the best running defense in the NFL right now and has allowed an average of just 70.8 yards per game. The New York Giants may need to lean on their big running back due to both Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks' statuses being up in the air, with Ahmad Bradshaw already ruled out.

Extra carries provide more opportunities for Jacobs to break a few long runs, but considering just how dominant the 49ers have been on defense, I can't recommend starting him this week.

Marques Colston

2 of 5

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston is perhaps the most hit or miss type of player there is at his position.

One week he'll go off for 118 yards and a touchdown, and the next week he'll log just one catch for eight yards. Quarterback Drew Brees loves to spread the ball around to all his offensive weapons, which basically makes Colston's title as the No. 1 receiver in that system a paper title.

With the Saints traveling to NFC South rival Atlanta this weekend, I don't like this matchup for Colston. The Falcons defense sees New Orleans two times every season and are familiar with how to cover No. 12 in the passing game.

Currently, Atlanta has the 14th ranked defense in the league.

Roy Helu

3 of 5

Look, Roy Helu is a fine running back from what I've seen; it's his head coach I have a problem with.

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan is the ultimate villain to all things fantasy football. He is the Joker to our Batman. Every time we think maybe, just maybe, he's got a little bit of sanity when it comes to his backfield, he proves us wrong.

Just when you think Shanny loves Tim Hightower, he benches him for Ryan Torrain. Just when Torrain looks to be the head coach's new starter, he decides to throw Roy Helu into the mix.

If Helu gets enough touches against Miami this weekend, there's a chance he's a top 12 running back when all the games are done. But, it's just as likely that he rides the pine all day while Torrain steals the glory.

Helu is one of those high risk/high reward plays this week. Roll the dice with Shanahan if you want, but I'm steering clear of all things Washington this week.

Josh Freeman

4 of 5

For all the great things Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman did last year, he's done just as many disappointing ones this season.

Freeman has already thrown 10 interceptions this year and just eight touchdowns. He's gone two games without a touchdown pass this season, while logging just two games with multiple TDs.

Surprisingly, the Houston Texans boast the best defense in the NFL as of right now and will prove to be a headache for Freeman and his owners if they choose to roll with him on Sunday.

Vernon Davis

5 of 5

From Dallas Clark to Jermichael Finley to Vernon Davis, many of the game's supposed elite tight ends have let fantasy owners down this season.

Davis has had just one 100-plus yard game this season despite the success of the San Fransisco 49ers so far. Besides his 114 reception yards against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3, Davis has bee virtually invisible in the San Fransisco passing attack.

He's logged four or less receptions for less than 50 yards in every game since his breakout performance.

The New York Giants' defense may not be on the same level as their opponents, but they should be able to continue Davis' struggles and make him a non-factor fantasy-wise this Sunday.
