Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos: A Profile of Junior Dos Santos
It has been a fast rise to the top for Junior dos Santos, who will go to battle with UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez at UFC on Fox 1. Seven straight dominant victories in his first three years with the UFC have put dos Santos in position to compete on the sport's biggest stage.
Fighting well under the limits of the heavyweight division, dos Santos uses his speed to avoid takedowns and overwhelm opponents in the striking department. Although he has primarily used his boxing to pick opponents apart, dos Santos also trains with jiu-jitsu ace Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
Already, dos Santos has dismantled devastating strikers like Mirko Filipovic, Gilbert Yvel and Shane Carwin. On top of that, dos Santos avoided being taken to the ground by jiu-jitsu practitioners like Fabricio Werdum and Gabriel Gonzaga.
A recent coach on The Ultimate Fighter, dos Santos had been scheduled to meet Brock Lesnar, but he earned a title shot by completely outclassing Carwin in a stand-up war. After initially earning a title shot by beating Roy Nelson, dos Santos' win over Carwin further proved that he was the clear top contender in the heavyweight division.
Velasquez has better wrestling than any of dos Santos' previous opponents, but the Brazilian heavyweight has shown enough takedown defense to assume that he is one of the biggest threats to Velasquez's heavyweight title.
At UFC on Fox 1, dos Santos will not only be hunting for UFC gold. The 27-year-old will also be looking to remain undefeated in the UFC and gain a massive fan following through the organization's first ever appearance on network television.
