UFC on Fox: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos Will Bring in a New Wave of MMA Fans
With the first heavyweight UFC matchup ready to take place on UFC 1 on Fox tonight, the real hope of Cain Velasquez versus Junior Dos Santos will be bringing in a new audience to the MMA world.
UFC has never had this big of a potential audience before with a match with such big implications. The result will be huge for Dana White and the UFC community, and the sport will finally start to enter the bigger picture of the American sports.
One of the main things that is going to help in doing so is the Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez PPV boxing match, which is playing on the same night. Watching two men battling it out is going to be the mood of sports this evening, and the fact that UFC is free on Fox has the potential to bring in a bigger audience.
While both sports are different, both are treading along the same water. Without all the Pacquiao-Marquez talk, it isn't a certainty that many fans outside of the MMA world would really be aware of the fight on Fox tonight. The UFC bout already has a potential new audience, and that audience will be salivating at the mouth just waiting to watch a gruesome battle in the ring.
The good thing for UFC is that their coverage starts earlier then the boxing match, and that is their chance to grab a new potential audience that already has an interest in the sport. They may lose that audience going into the title match, but they will at least be able to try and sway an audience into watching UFC which is on a lot more then boxing matches that happen only few days a year.
UFC's other hope should be in capturing an entire new audience, outside of the MMA or boxing world. Perhaps those fans have caught a glimpse here and there, but the opportunity to watch a title match for free could bring in an entire new audience.
Many people will not understand what they are watching, but the at least they will know they are watching to men who considered the best fighting it out to be the heavy weight champion. If that can't attract a new audience for the MMA world, I don't know what else could.
