Pacquiao vs Marquez: Why Confidence and Weight Will Be the Death of Marquez
Juan Manuel Marquez comes into his fight against Manny Pacquiao with a lot of confidence despite not beating him in their first three fights. He has gained quite a bit of muscle to try to floor Pac-Man, but that will hurt him more than it will help.
The first fight between these two was ruled a draw, yet Marquez firmly believed that he had won. When the two met again, Pacquiao was pronounced the winner in a very close fight, but Maruqez felt that he had won again, saying he was robbed.
Now that they meet for the third time, you'd think Marquez had already knocked Manny out twice if you only saw how confident he is.
Confidence is a killer when it comes to sports, and if Marquez becomes complacent, he is in for a rude awakening.
However, his biggest concern should be his weight. Marquez has to gain 10-15 pounds for this fight over the course of a few months. This is a huge change and he will not be used to his new body.
The last time Marquez had to gain a lot of weight was against none other than Floyd Mayweather. In that fight Marquez lost in unanimous decision (120-107, 119-108, 118-109). His weight slowed him down and he took a beating.
Marquez was roughly 140 pounds for that fight, but he will be five pounds heavier for this fight with Pac-Man. He gained this weight to add a lot of muscle to try to finish Pacquiao off, but he will look like a slow cow fighting a fly. He isn't going to be able to touch Pacquiao despite being bigger and stronger than usual.
Marquez is going to be too slow to utilize his strength, and that will lead to an easy win for Pacquiao.
Marquez shouldn't have complained about the decisions after the first two fights. He has angered Pacquiao, and this could be the very first fight Manny has been angry for. This will lead to him fighting harder than usual, and we know that he's already broken his usual training method to get even better.
While his emotions could blind him, I expect him to go out and punish Marquez, shutting him up after this fight. You can't complain if you're unconscious, and Pac-Man knows that.
While Marquez thinks that his swagger and strength will help him, they will only hold him back.
