Pacquiao vs Marquez: Why Pac-Man Will Dominate Marquez

Alex HallNov 12, 2011

Tonight's welterweight title match between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez may be their third bout against one another, but don't expect this one to be as close as the previous two.

The first time these two met, they fought at 120 pounds, the next at 130 and now they'll get at it both in the 140-pound range. Pacquiao has been fighting in this weight range for a few years now, and has had little issue in transition as he has won all his bouts since bulking up.

Marquez, on the other hand, finds himself fighting in this weight range for only the second time in his professional career, the first time coming in an embarrassing loss to Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr.

The Mayweather fight was the first Marquez has lost since these two rivals last met, but that's the same kind of elite talent the Mexican-born boxer will find himself in the ring with tonight.

Going with the fact that he's been fighting below the weight range he'll find himself in for this third match with Pac-Man doesn't exactly sound like a winning formula heading into a fight with arguably the best active boxer in the sport.

"He's bigger, bulked up and slower. When Manny puts him down this time I don't think he's going to be able to get up from the way this Manny Pacquiao punches," Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach told the Boston Globe.

Pac-Man has been fighting in the 140 range plenty in recent years and has looked just as dangerous, if not more so than usual. Paired with the fact he has the mental edge of winning the previous bout with Marquez, I can't see his opponent pulling off a victory and may not be able to keep things as close as they have been in their previous two fights.
