Nebraska Links: Huskers Name Captains, Plan to Sign Numerous DBs
The Huskers vote on their captains at the end of the season and only allow Seniors to vote. The captains for this year were Joe Ganz, Zach Potter, Ty Steinkuhker, and Nate Swift.
“I love the way Coach Pelini did it this year,” Potter said. “It wasn’t just fall camp or summer workouts or spring ball. It was all season, what we put together.”
The first-year coach said he’s long believed in naming captains at the end of the season, not the start, as Nebraska has typically handled it. It was open only to seniors, and the voting was close, Pelini said.
Huskers are recruiting hordes of DBs by design:
Head coach Bo Pelini, known for his love of good secondary play and his usage of nickel and dime defenses, is stocking up on cornerbacks and safeties for his upcoming class to confront the Big 12’s spread offenses and address a dearth of players at the position.
“When I got in here, the numbers were staggeringly down,” Pelini said. “When you play in this conference with all of the spread, you’ve got to have some depth there. Probably one of that group won’t make it, but we had to have some numbers there. We like the group.”
Pelini said Nebraska will “oversign” in its recruiting class, which means NU will try to ink more than regular 25 scholarships, with the intent that a few may not academically qualify.
