Jerry Sandusky Sex Scandal: Penn State Coach Mike McQueary Must Be Next to Go

Adam WellsNov 14, 2011

One of the most prominent figures in the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal is Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary because of what he testified to seeing years ago. The fact that he did nothing has outraged people and the fact that he still has a job is puzzling.

Of the principal players who knew or are alleged to have known about Sandusky's transgressions, McQueary is the only one that hasn't paid a price yet. He is still a member of the coaching staff, and even though he wasn't at Penn State's game on Saturday, he is still getting paid by the university.

From the Associated Press (via Washington Times):

"

Penn State placed assistant coach Mike McQueary on administrative leave, capping a tumultuous week in which his name surfaced as a key witness in a grand jury investigation into child sexual abuse allegations against a former coach.

School president Rod Erickson notified McQueary of the decision Friday, a day after the school said the receivers coach would not be present Saturday when the Nittany Lions play Nebraska because he has received threats.

"

The fact that the school has placed McQueary on leave because he has received threats is not the right way to go.

According to The Patriot-News, reports that he is protected by Pennsylvania's Whistleblower laws, which basically means that Penn State can't fire him unless a court determines that he is not protected by the aforementioned law.

Don't get me wrong: I don't want to see McQueary get hurt, but he should not be getting paid by this university. Why did Joe Paterno get fired for not doing more but McQueary gets to keep his job even though he said he saw Sandusky sexually assaulting a young boy and did nothing to stop it?

I am sure that Penn State has reasons for not firing McQueary right now, but the fact that they haven't addressed them makes the situation worse. The administrators need to step forward and explain that soon.

Considering the venom that people are feeling towards McQueary right now, and the fact that he was a member of the Paterno coaching staff, he is not likely to be a part of the university for too much longer. But the fact that he still is one week after all this information came out is confusing.
