Mike McQueary: Leave Not Enough for Scandal's Biggest Question Mark

Michael DixonNov 12, 2011

I know there are legal issues at play here, but I can't get past this. We know about the Penn State Scandal by now. It's been all over the news for a week.

Joe Paterno needed to go and needed to go immediately. I know what he's meant to Penn State over the years, but that's not really a question.

On Saturday, it was announced that Mike McQueary, the man who allegedly witnessed Jerry Sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in the shower, will be placed on administrative leave, as was reported by ESPN.

But how is Mike McQueary on administrative leave and not fired?

I know what president Rodney Erickson said.

"

There are complexities to that issue that I am not prepared to go into at this point.

"

I understand that and I am not going to pretend to understand all of the legal issues at play.

But McQueary is just as guilty as Paterno in this case, if not quite a bit more.

Administrative leave is the bare minimum. He couldn't coach them on Saturday vs. Nebraska and he certainly can't coach them on the road at Ohio State and Wisconsin.

But the bottom line is that he needs to go. I can't imagine a situation where he would get a chance to coach anywhere again. Frankly, I don't really care.

If you walk in on what he allegedly walked in on and fail to physically stop it, then fail to report the incident to the police, I really don't care what happens to you. This happened in 2002. In my eyes, he's been at Penn State nine years too long.

I don't care that he cost Paterno his job. He didn't. Paterno had the same opportunities to go to the authorities and failed to do so. Nobody can be blamed for Paterno's dismissal other than Paterno.

It does need to be said that these are all charges. Sure, we all have our opinions on the matter, but nobody has been convicted of anything as of right now.

But with the exception of Sandusky, nobody in this situation has any more explaining to do than McQueary. The fact that it took so long for anything to happen is puzzling.

The next step is to fire him. Yes, I believe that there are complexities at hand right now. But the moment those complexities are cleared up, he needs to be fired.
