Can Arsenal Hold on to the Premiership Title?

Ashish WesleyFeb 12, 2008

Greetings fellow gooners! Arse-ish writing in to you from the hot and humid climes of Mangalore today, after falling a bit silent over the last couple of days.

So what's all this I hear about us opening a gaping hole at the top of the premiership?! I'm sure you all know all that happened over the weekend past, and indeed our win over Blackburn on Monday—Ha! Isn't it just wonderful.

All we have to do now is hold on to this lead till the end of the season and we could see a delighted Billy Gallas hold the cup aloft in sheer delirium. The end of the season is still in the distance, however, in May, with a third of the season remaining.

With the loss of Thierry Henry and with a relatively inexperienced squad, we have had to fight our way to the top of the premiership. It is now up to us to show the world that we can indeed hold on for the next dozen games or so.

So are we good for the title this season after acquiring a sizeable lead in the standings?

Well that's the big question.

In the past couple of days I have been guilty of handing us the title if we got a five point lead—I don't think it's that ridiculous of a thought, but it wont be easy.

Injuries and how well we handle the pressure will be the key to our success. We do have some players coming back to the squad, with the likes of van Persie and Toure returning and adding so much more to the outfit.

We all know that the Geriatric Fergie will go headlong into his intimidating mind-games right about now. This adds to the already heavy pressure on a young side, pushing for the premiership title, seemingly against the odds.

Towards the last bit of the season there's also the added distraction of the cups, namely the Champions League and the FA cup. Every game in each competition is huge!

It all comes down how we juggle our squad through each of the competitions. Will we be able to sacrifice any one of the cups so as to consolidate our position atop the premiership?

Well I'm not sure Arsenel will resort to any of that. So it will be us in full power in all three competitions, with maybe a calculated risk here and there.

This is where injuries will come into play. This season we have shown our ability to cope with certain players missing for whatever reason, an example being van Persie, who we have not seen in an Arsenal shirt for sometime now.

We have also witnesses s

omeone else step up, however, and take over the goal scoring mantle, that being Adebayor in this case. There are other examples, of course, but I won't go into them now.

The squad has also shown us that we will not get pushed around, and are not intimidated by anyone—not anymore!

This team has also had different individuals who have stepped up in different times during the campaign to put in match winning performances.

Cescy did it to a deadly effect during the start of the season. The midfield carried us through for a bit, before the phenomenon we call Adebayor took centre stage.

Well it may not just be about one player but a combined performance. It could well be a combination of anyone from a returning van Persie to partner Adebayor to Cescy, Hleb, a steel invigorated Flamster, Kolo and Gallas.

Back now to the original question—can we win it all this season? We can!!

I really believe we can do it. We will have to grind out results as the pressure may wear on the players, as was quite palpable during the Blackburn game. With just a bit of luck and some good results in the the head to heads with the other powerhouses, we have  a strong chance to remain on top.

I read somewhere today that we are on top only because we have been the most consistent team so far this season.  It's all about keeping our nerves and putting in the same performances that we've already proven capable.

If we can remain consistent, we could have very pleasant memories of this season—very agreeable and pleasant memories! Thats the stuff of dreams!

Come on you Reds!!!!
