New York Giants vs. San Francisco 49ers: Spread Info, Line and Predictions

Eric BowmanNov 11, 2011

The New York Giants head out west this weekend to take on the surprisingly good San Francisco 49ers

This is a marquee matchup, as both teams will be put to the test on both sides of the ball. The Giants are coming off a great victory over the New England Patriots, and the 49ers are looking to extend their six-game win streak.

The 49ers are 3-1 at home, and the Giants are 3-1 on the road. This will be an intense battle for all four quarters, as well as one of the best games of the weekend.

Jim Harbaugh has done the unthinkable and made the 49ers a contender in his first year as head coach. He has this team believing they will succeed, but Sunday's matchup won't be easy.

The Giants need to prove last week wasn't a fluke, and the 49ers must prove they can beat a legitimate team, something they haven't done in a few weeks.

With that said, let's take a look at some specifics of this NFC showdown.

When: Sunday, Nov. 13 at 4:15 p.m. ET

Where: Candlestick Park, San Francisco, CA

Watch: FOX

Spread

The 49ers are favored at -4, which is mainly due to the fact that it's a home game. San Francisco has been on a roll this season, but Sunday is a true test for the 49ers, and I like the Giants to keep it close or even win.

The Giants will look to Eli Manning to exploit the 49ers secondary, which is their primary weakness. Given how well Manning has been this season, take him, the Giants and the four points.

Over/Under

The over/under is set at 42.5, which certainly makes you think. Both teams have very strong defenses, which means one could out duel the other and shut the opposing offense down all game.

I don't see that happening, as both teams will easily score more than 22 points on Sunday afternoon.

Key Injuries

For the Giants, RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot) is listed as out, but WR Hakeem Nicks (hamstring), CB Prince Amukamara (foot) and DE Osi Umenyiora (knee) are all questionable.

For the 49ers, WRs Braylon Edwards (knee) and Michael Crabtree (foot) are probable for Sunday. LB Navarro Bowman (shoulder), RBs Frank Gore (ankle) and Kendall Hunter (ankle) and DB Dashon Goldson (knee) are all questionable.

Fantasy Big Plays

With Bradshaw out, Brandon Jacobs is a definite start. Yes, the 49ers have the No. 1 defense in the NFL and have yet to allow a rushing touchdown all season, but that changes on Sunday. The Giants are counting on Jacobs to come through, and he'll get plenty of opportunities to put up solid fantasy numbers.

Eli Manning is also a must-start, as the 49ers pass defense ranks No. 22 in the NFL. Manning continues to play well, trying to live up to his preseason comments about being as elite as Tom Brady.

For the 49ers, Frank Gore is always a great start, and that won't change for Sunday. The Giants are allowing 127 rushing yards per game, and Gore will have no trouble dominating the stat sheet.

Gore will have the bulk of the 49ers offense, which is why I wouldn't start Alex Smith or any 49ers receivers on Sunday.

Keys to New York Win

The Giants have to spread the ball around, which means it's up to Manning to deliver on the road. He's done a good job so far this season, but he is known for having those moments that make you wonder what in the world he was thinking.

Avoiding turnovers will be key for the Giants, as well as applying consistent pressure on Alex Smith. Frustrate the 49ers flow of offense, and New York shouldn't have much trouble winning.

Keys to San Francisco Win

The 49ers need to get after Manning and force turnovers, as it will greatly increase their chances of winning. The Giants aren't very good against the run, so expect Gore to get a heavy dose of carries on Sunday.

San Francisco's defense has been making plays all season long, and that must continue on Sunday to prevent the Giants from stealing a victory in their house.

Prediction

The Giants have had their ups and downs this season, but they will be on their A-game out west against the 49ers. This game will come down to fourth-quarter play, and I give the edge to Manning and Company.

Manning will battle back from early struggles to deliver a great performance late in the game to give the Giants the victory.
