Nebraska Huskers Get a Huge Lone Star Recruit in RB Rex Burkhead
Four-star All-Purpose RB Rex Burkhead is a Husker.
That makes eight Lone Star State recruits and 21 overall commitments to the Huskers. This time last year, the Huskers were barely in the teens with recruiting commitments.
Burkhead is listed at 5'11″191lbs and is praised for his meanness and football smarts. He is projected to play RB in college, although some think he might be a WR or S at Nebraska.
Defensive Line coach John Papuchis was the "closer" on the deal and Tim Beck also helped out. Texas A&M, Stanford, Texas Tech, Michigan, California and Auburn all went after Burkhead and rumors have swirled that Texas offered him a "take-it-or-leave-it" scholarship.
If you believe Rivals, Nebraska now has the 20th best recruiting class in the nation.
ESPN compares him to John Lynch and sees him being a safety in college:
"Burkhead is one of those junk yard dogs that makes your roster meaner and tougher and we love that about him. He’s a warrior, throwback type of player that will fight, scrap and sellout to get the job done and make the play. He is essentially a running back at quarterback in an option-oriented scheme, but he is so versatile and we see him being a serious safety candidate as well.
We are not so sure that in time he won’t end up being a safety/strong safety candidate. He has a lot of John Lynch-type qualities to his style. The bottom line with Burkhead is that he’s just a football player, plain and simple and he has excellent football smarts.
