Circle City Classic Basketball Tournament Recap

Indiana HS HoopsDec 15, 2008

In case you missed it, The Circle City Classic Challenge of Champions was this past weekend. The tournament featured, what could be considered, the top 12 best basketball teams in the state of Indiana. It’s games/tournaments like these where you can truly see Indiana High School Basketball at it’s finest. All proceeds from the Classic went to helping out youth and family corrections programs provided by the Indiana Black Expo, Inc. and the Indiana Sports Corporation. Props to director Tony Mason, as you did an outstanding job setting up and organizing the single day event!

ESPN (Reggie Rankin, Scouts.) has an outstanding report of the event:

The best matchup of the day was T.C. Howe (Indianapolis) vs. Marion (Ind.). North Carolina State signee Scott Wood, a 6-6 senior wing, led Marion to a 74-72 victory by scoring 28 points. Wood was supported by the inside presence of PF Mikel Brigham, who recorded posted a 20 point, 16 rebound effort. Andre Hampton, a 6-2 junior S,G matched Wood with 28 points and played all 32 minutes for T.C. Howe.

ESPNU Super 60 players — the top prospects in the Class of 2010 — who had strong showings included SF Deshaun Thomas (Fort Wayne, Ind./ Bishop Luers) with 31 points and seven rebounds and SF Dominique Ferguson ( Indianapolis/ Lawrence North) who finished with 19 points and six rebounds.

Other top performances included Roddy Richardson (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson) who dropped 23 points and grabbed 16 rebounds; and unsigned senior PF/C Justin Reid from (Indianapolis/North Central) scoring 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

"

ESPN, (Reggie Rankin, Scouts.) also went on to analyze a few key and surprise players:

-Scott Wood SG/SF (6-6, 185) Senior, Marion, Ind., Signed with North Carolina State:

"

A very skilled wing player. He can score in transition above the rim. In the half court, he displays a variety of skills. Wood is a good ball handler when making a scoring move. He can knock down the open 3 off the catch or dribble.

"

-Deshaun Thomas SF (6-7, 225) Junior, Fort Wayne, Ind., Committed to Ohio State:

"

Thomas can shoot the 3 off the catch or dribble. Thomas has a great lift and follow through on his shot. He sprints the wing in transition and in the half court. He spaces to the open area or looks to make a play off the dribble. Thomas likes to go right and shoot the step back or the pull-up going to his left all from 3-point land.

"

-Dominique Ferguson SG/SF (6-9, 205) Junior, Indianapolis/ Lawrence North, Committed to Kentucky:

"

He is very thin and needs strength, but has excellent skills. Ferguson is smooth and attacks the basket by slashing through defenders, finishing with his great length and athletic ability. He also can create a shot and finish with either hand. Ferguson can shoot the 3 off the catch with ease and has good elevation and follow through on his shot.
