Joe Paterno Fired: Why Firing the Entire Coaching Staff Now Would Be Crazy

Randy ChambersNov 10, 2011

By now we have all heard the reports of what allegedly happened at Penn State. Former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky allegedly molested young boys for several years, and almost nothing was done about the charges.

We all have different opinions and feelings about what took place on that Penn State campus. But from a football standpoint they have to be very cautious on their next moves.

The truth is Penn State can't fire their entire coaching staff right now.

They've already let go of head coach Joe Paterno, which may backfire on the university this season as they will have interim coach Tom Bradley take over for the rest of the year. Bradley was the defensive coordinator this season but has no head-coaching experience.

That's not good considering Penn State is in the middle of trying to win the Big Ten division and make a BCS Bowl.

Although all of the coaches probably knew at least a little bit of what was going on, you have to keep them in place until you find potential replacements. Firing the entire coaching staff and starting brand new next season will almost guarantee failure next year.

With this scandal going on right now, coaches won't be lining up outside the door to help Penn State like they normally would be.

You also have to think about recruiting and how a entire brand new coaching staff would effect that situation. Potential recruits have probably already taken a hit, the Nittany Lions should do anything they can to limit the damage.

Penn State has already taken great first steps in firing Joe Paterno and president Graham B. Spanier, but every move from here on out should be well thought through.

It could make or break the Nittany Lions football program moving forward.
