Raiders vs. Chargers: Hot Seat Watch for San Diego Head Coach Norv Turner

Ryan PhillipsNov 10, 2011

I'm going to go ahead and be honest right up front—I don't know why the San Diego Chargers ever hired Norv Turner to be their head coach.

I feel bad saying this, because Turner is a heck of a nice guy, but while he is certainly a smart football mind, he is just not built to a head coach in the NFL

When Turner took over as the head coach of the Chargers in 2007, he inherited a team that went 14-2 the previous year. San Diego was arguably the most talented team in the league and has remained so throughout Turner's four-and-a-half years at the helm.

With the Chargers, Turner's record is 45-27, and he's 3-3 in the playoffs. The Bolts also have not won a playoff game since the 2008-09 season. In 2008, they made the playoffs with an 8-8 record only because the AFC West was the worst division in football and the Denver Broncos collapsed down the stretch.

Last season, the Chargers finished with the No. 1 ranked offense and No. 1 ranked defense in the NFL, and somehow went 9-7 and missed the playoffs. How does that even happen?

Several factors have become crystal clear about Turner's teams over the years, and they have kept the Chargers from winning at the rate they should have.

First, his teams are wildly undisciplined—whether it comes to penalties or actions off the field, the Chargers have been so boneheaded it's really ridiculous.

San Diego has also shown absolutely no urgency or fire under Turner. That has manifested itself in the Chargers' slow starts to the past three seasons, and if you have ever seen San Diego run a two-minute drill under Turner, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

The real problem is that this wildly-talented team has no fire and has taken on the bland personality of its coach.

Unless the Chargers make a deep run in the playoffs or live up to preseason expectations and reach the Super Bowl, there should be no reason Turner returns next season.

He simply hasn't done enough with the ridiculous amount of talent he has been given.
