The Most Bone-Crunching Hits of the 2011 NFL Season

Tony SantorsaNov 10, 2011

Football is the most physical sport out there; there is no doubt in my mind. Besides scoring touchdowns and putting up points, it's all about beating the snot out of your opponent and then some.

In that spirit, allow me to introduce to you some of the most bone-crunching hits of the 2011 season. Keep in mind that some of these hits were illegal and that the players involved were fined, but it still doesn't take away from the "shock factor" and how bone-crunching they really were.

Without further ado, here are the most bone-crunching hits of the 2011 NFL season.

Dashon Goldson Decks Mike Williams

1 of 25

This was an absolutely tremendous hit by Dashon Goldson—he literally knocked Mike Williams into next week with this dramatic blow to the chest.

There is nothing wrong with this hit, as I can guarantee you that Williams had second thoughts of running routes Goldson's way for the rest of the game.

Richard Seymour Throws Tom Brady to the Ground Like a Rag Doll

2 of 25

What was Richard Seymour doing on this play? I mean, he comes across as a complete idiot. But then again, when you think of it, Seymour was making a statement against his former team.

This kind of reminds me of Rocky IV, when Ivan Drago literally threw Rocky Balboa around like a rag doll.

Plaxico Burress Takes out Mike Jenkins with a Block

3 of 25

Plaxico Burress is definitely in the minority on this one, as he is one of the few wide receivers that will actually sacrifice their body to make a block.

This was an absolutely devastating block by Plax.

Mason Foster Goes Helmet-to-Helmet with Chad Ochocinco

4 of 25

This came from this year's preseason, as Mason Foster ultimately knocked Chad Ochcoinco into next week despite being fined, as this hit was deemed illegal.

Could this be why Ochocinco has yet to succeed as a Patriot? He has been cutting corners as running pass patterns. However, I doubt it, as Ochocinco has had his bell ring several times in his career. It's just something to think about.

Troy Polamalu Nearly Takes off Wes Welker's Head

5 of 25

I love Troy Polamalu, as he's one of the best defenders to ever play the game—but this hit was simply dirty and inexcusable.

However, Polamalu did send a message, as the Pittsburgh Steelers went onto physically dominate the New England Patriots and eventually win the game.

Stevie Johnson Ends Eric Berry's Season Early with a Block

6 of 25

This was the hit that ended Eric Berry's season.

Was it a dirty block or simply a great block? What do you think?

Danny Woodhead Nearly Gets Beheaded by Devin Holland

7 of 25

I was shocked that Danny Woodhead was able to get up after this devastating blow to the head, as he somehow managed to walk away with a concussion.

This hit was undoubtedly a bone-crunching one, but it was illegal, and Devin Holland was fined for it.

Rahim Moore Crushes Donald Jones

8 of 25

It's amazing this hit was in the preseason, as Rahim Moore went all out on this hit and literally knocked out Donald Jones.

Was it a dirty hit? Stevie Johnson definitely thought so.

Michael Vick Punishes Troy Polamalu

9 of 25

Yet another hit from the preseason that was somewhat idiotic by Michael Vick and Troy Polamalu.

This was simply a preseason game, and there was no reason for Polamalu trying to make something happen, as he could have seriously injured himself—and he almost did. The same could be said about Vick, as it was a phenomenal hit, but he should have never been in that situation to injure himself.

Luckily, both players were uninjured on the play.

Ndamukong Suh Welcomes Andy Dalton to the NFL

10 of 25

Warren Sapp was knocked as the "QB Killa," so what should we call Ndamukong Suh? I mean, Suh actually plays to kill the quarterback and it's so obvious.

Do you think Suh is a dirty player?

Hines Ward Gets Crushed by Ray Lewis

11 of 25

Ray Lewis may have been fined on this hit, but he absolutely wrecked Hines Ward.

Ward is known for questionable blocks, and perhaps Lewis was giving him some of his own medicine on this play.

Jarret Johnson Drops Hines Ward

12 of 25

And the Hines Ward abuse continues as yet another Baltimore Raven lays down the wood.

Jarret Johnson absolutely drops Ward.

Julius Peppers Nearly Rips off Matt Ryan's Head

13 of 25

Matt Ryan is lucky to be alive after this play—that's all I have to say.

Should Julius Peppers have been flagged?

Ryan Clark Whacks Ed Dickson

14 of 25

Another hit from the heated Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers rivalry.

Ryan Clark was fined due to helmet-to-helmet contact. But my question is: Why don't NFL defenders wrap up anymore? Clark could have made a just as devastating hit, but even better, a tackle on the play.

Brian Urlacher Destroys Everything in Sight

15 of 25

This is a prime example of why Brian Urlacher is one of the greatest linebackers to ever play the game.

Urlacher blew up this play for its start, as he took out one blocker, Olin Kreutz, and then went on to drive him into the ball carrier and stop this play in its steps.

Ryan Mathews Lays the Wood on Kyle Arrington

16 of 25

This is how running backs should run.

Ryan Mathews ran with a purpose and lowered his shoulder before going out of bounds and punished Kyle Arrington.

Dunta Robinson Goes Helmet-to-Helmet with Jeremy Maclin

17 of 25

This was a bone-crunching hit, but all I have to say is that Dunta Robinson is such an idiot.

Brandon Spikes Completely Destroys Jake Ballard

18 of 25

Brandon Spikes made his presence known on this play, as he absolutely knocked Jake Ballard flat on his back.

This was a truly a great hit and an even better play, as Spikes prevented Ballard from getting the first-down on 3rd-and-long.

LaRon Landry Lays the Wood on Laurent Robinson

19 of 25

If I was Laurent Robinson, I would have kicked Tony Romo's ass after this play—Romo nearly got Robinson killed on this play.

LaRon Landry simply flew in like a hawk and laid down the lumber.

Haloti Ngata Wrecks Rashard Mendenhall

20 of 25

Haloti Ngata is the best defensive lineman in football, and this play is a prime example, the way that he exploded through the line and absolutely punished Rashard Mendenhall.

In my opinion, this could be the hit of the year.

Nnamdi Asomugha Destroys Chris Cooley

21 of 25

Nnamdi Asomugha is known to be one of the best cover-cornerbacks in the NFL, but he sent a message with this hit: He is not afraid to hit.

Asomugha read this screen pass to perfection, as Chris Cooley paid the price.

Cam Newton Sacrifices His Body

22 of 25

Cam Newton is one hell of a player, as he fully extended himself on this play and ultimately sacrificed his body to try and score a touchdown.

Unfortunately, Newton did not score a touchdown on this play, and he probably got up feeling a bit woozy.

Bernard Pollard Decks Deji Karim

23 of 25

There is no question that this was an illegal hit, as Bernard Pollard absolutely led with his helmet, but it was no question a bone-cruncher.

The Cleveland Browns Beat Up on Michael Vick

24 of 25

Michael Vick has been getting abused all year long and took a beaten during this preseason game against the Cleveland Browns.

Do you think that the NFL is treating Vick fairly?
