Joe Paterno Fired: Should the Nebraska Game Even Be Played on Saturday?

Nathan LoweryNov 9, 2011

By now most of you have learned the news that iconic Penn State Head Coach Joe Paterno was fired by the board of trustees as Happy Valley struggles to deal with this horrific child abuse scandal.

Since the allegations first broke last Friday, the Nittany Lions have had to deal with these ugly distractions that is taking away from the game.

The game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers should not be played this Saturday.

Too much is going on for us to focus on football, as evident with Paterno's firing.

All anyone has been saying is that these allegations are more than just football, and despite the fact that Paterno did what he was supposed to do regarding the incident in 2002, where assistant coach Mike McQueary allegedly saw Jerry Sandusky assaulting a 10-year-old boy in a locker room shower. McQueary took the incident to Paterno who then went to the Athletic department who failed to go anywhere with it.

If those that called for Paterno's firing stated that this is more than just football, then why should a game be played if the allegations are beyond what happens on the field.

The game, being played in Beaver Stadium, is just too much for the people of Happy Valley to deal with right now.

They are dealing with absolutely horrific incidents that should never be done, the departure of their beloved and iconic coach, and now you are going to tell them to just go on and play a football game?

No. That is unfair to Penn State players and fans.

It's like back in the 1972 Munich Olympics where 11 Israeli athletes were killed in a terrorist hostage assault. The Games resumed after several days of postponement, and in the end, that was a slap in the face to the families of the victims.

The Big Ten should learn from the International Olympic Committee's mistake.

The players have to deal with a changing of coaches and all of the distractions that are going on right now, and that takes away from the beauty of the sport.

I understand that the game must go on, but in this case, it's just too much to deal with right now.

Farewell Joe Pa, I'm sorry that you have to go out like this.
