Penn State Sex Scandal Draws Eyes from Feds as DOE Opens Investigation
We are about to know every single detail that took place amidst the Jerry Sandusky scandal. The eyes of the Federal government are about to fall on Penn State.
The US Department of Education released a statement on Wednesday that should come as no surprise to those at Penn State. They will soon release an investigation of their own.
This would of course coincide with the school's investigation into the matter and any followup that police investigators need to carry out. If there was a University-sized fine tooth comb, it would be going through the swath of Happy Valley right about now.
The reason for the investigation is cited as findings into whether Penn State University failed to comply with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (the Clery Act).
The Act mandates, "colleges and universities are required to disclose the number of criminal offenses on campus that are reported each year. In addition, in certain cases, the institution must issue a timely warning if a reported crime represents a threat to the campus community."
If the Grand Jury findings hold up in a court of law and the DOE investigation finds the same, this will not end well at all.
It looks ever more likely that various officials at Penn State knew that Jerry Sandusky was allegedly molesting and sexually abusing minor boys. That he was possibly doing it on campus property brings in the extra investigators of the DOE.
At the very least, officials had heard rumors and rumblings that something sinister was going on. As we have found, police officials were never once brought in to investigate, so we can assume with confidence that paperwork was never filed to the DOE in an effort to be Clery Act compliant.
All this means is that another investigation will be launched into a deplorable scandal that is still very much shrouded as far as the finer details are concerned.
We can only hope that the truth of the extent of this scandal is revealed. After that, the healing can finally begin.
