WWE News: Jerry Lawler Reveals How He Feels About His Position on WWE Commentary

Drake OzNov 10, 2011

There was once a time when Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler formed arguably the greatest announce team in wrestling history.

Lawler did a great job in his role as a heel commentator, and Good Old J.R. was the best play-by-man the business has ever seen. But nowadays Ross is nothing more than Vince McMahon’s personal punching bag, and Lawler gets worse and worse by the day.

I have no explanation for Ross’s situation, but “The King” seems to have one for his own.

Here’s what Lawler had to say in an interview with thecampussocialite.com about his feelings on announcing:

"

I still enjoy performing in the ring as much as I ever did. I didn't get into this business to be a commentator; I don't even really enjoy being a commentator. I just happen to be able to do it where people can stand to listen to me.

"

You know how when someone doesn’t enjoy doing something, it shows with their lackluster work? Well, that’s exactly what’s happening with Lawler.

While I have the utmost respect for Lawler and everything he’s contributed to the wrestling business, he shouldn’t continue commentating if he doesn’t enjoy it—because it shows.

Lawler used to be an awesome heel, and now, he’s a corny baby face who is almost completely out of touch with the WWE product. He makes lame jokes, it’s blatantly obvious that he never watches SmackDown and he adds virtually nothing to Monday Night Raw.

If he’s just commentating to collect a paycheck, then he needs to stop now.

There are a number of announcers currently under contract with the WWE who could do a much better job than Lawler currently does. William Regal, Josh Mathews and—um hello?—Jim Ross would do 10 times better at the announcers table than Lawler.

So, if Lawler doesn’t want to do it, then he shouldn’t. And the WWE should put someone in his seat who actually wants to.
