Week 10 Fantasy Football Rankings: Ranking the Riskiest WR Plays

Ryan PhillipsNov 9, 2011

For Week 10's games, there are several bad matchups for wide receivers league wide. For the sake of your fantasy team, I'm going to go ahead and let you know which guys face difficult challenges and why you should probably find a spot on your bench for them.

Darrius Heyward-Bey

Despite having a few solid games earlier in the season, the Oakland Raiders' first-round pick from 2009 barely saw the field in the team's 38-24 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 9. While coach Hue Jackson has insisted that Heyward-Bey wasn't benched, he was still behind Jacoby Ford, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Denarius Moore and Chaz Schilens for that game. That's bad news if you thought he was on his way to a breakout season.

Heyward-Bey played well in Weeks 5-8 and appeared to finally be headed in the right direction, and in seven games played this year, he has 27 catches for 434 yards and a touchdown. But the fact that he only played 12 snaps against Denver should worry anyone who invested in him this season.

At this point, you have to believe that Jackson doesn't trust the Maryland product, and I don't see him getting on the field very much over the next few weeks. Besides, against a San Diego Chargers pass defense that has been fairly solid all year long, expecting a big week from Heyward-Bey would be a mistake.

Hakeem Nicks

The New York Giants' No. 1 wideout has been battling injuries all season and is currently struggling to return from a hamstring issue. On Wednesday, Nicks was able to run at full speed, but did not practice. He hopes to return to individual drills tomorrow, but he is looking very questionable for this weekend's matchup with the San Francisco 49ers.

Even if Nicks does play, he clearly won't be back to 100 percent, and against an outstanding 49ers defense, it's tough to see him doing much damage. He will be an extremely risky play Sunday, and if you own him, you should probably look for other options for at least another week.

If you spent a high pick on Reggie Wayne this season because you thought he was going to be his can't-miss self again this season, I really sympathize with you. Wayne and the rest of the Colts have been terribly disappointing this season, and things aren't looking up at all in Indianapolis.

In Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons, Wayne was held to just 30 yards on four receptions as quarterback Curtis Painter continued to struggle. So far this season, Wayne has 39 catches for 517 yards and just one touchdown.

In Week 10, Wayne will be facing a Jacksonville Jaguars defense that ranks eighth in the NFL and is allowing just 197.0 yards per game through the air. There is no way you should start him in this matchup. You should have better options available, and until Painter proves he can actually get the ball to his playmakers, you're wasting a starting spot with Wayne.
