BCS Rankings 2011: Boise State and Houston Will Crash BCS Bowls
The Boise State Broncos and Houston Cougars are both very likely to go undefeated this year.
And that makes them very likely to find themselves in BCS Bowls.
The Broncos are still alive in the BCS National Championship Game picture, but will need a lot of help.
Boise would need Oklahoma State to lose, Stanford to lose and Georgia to either win or at least play LSU extremely tight in the SEC title game.
If all of those things happen, Boise State would clearly be the best team still unbeaten, and would finally get their shot to play on the biggest of stages.
If not, the best they can hope for is a BCS bowl, which admittedly isn’t awful, but is below what an undefeated Boise State team deserves.
Houston, on the other hand, would be absolutely honored to play in a BCS bowl game.
The Cougs have been steadily climbing up the BCS rankings all season and now find themselves in the No. 11 spot after 11 weeks.
They have a pretty easy schedule the rest of the way, but will still most likely have to play a tough Southern Mississippi team in the Conference USA championship game.
If Southern Miss is still ranked then, as they are now, it would be a huge victory for Houston and would easily propel them towards a BCS bowl game.
Houston hasn’t finished a season ranked since 1990 and hadn’t won a single bowl game since 1980 before a victory in the 2008 Armed Forces Bowl.
Just finishing ranked would be an accomplishment for these Cougars, but it really looks like they will be going bowling in the BCS this season. That’s really a huge boost to the program.
The most upsetting outcome would be if both Boise and Houston make BCS bowls and have to play one another.
These teams need a chance to prove themselves against the six traditional powerhouse conferences.
I hope they get it.
