Week 11: The Dozen Games You Can't Miss

Dan VastaNov 9, 2011

Week 11 is soon upon us, and we can expect a few more upsets that will shake up the BCS. So, the question remains as to who will fall next? Will there even be an upset this weekend?

We know somebody will fall between Oregon and Stanford, but how about every other top ten team? This could be considered shakeup Saturday due to so many crucial games down the road.

Which team will look past their opponents and which ones will demolish them? Here are your biggest games of the weekend.

No. 10 Virginia Tech at No. 21 Georgia Tech: Thurs. 8 ET ESPN

1 of 11

The Hokies and Yellow Jackets square off in a game that will likely decide the Coastal Division in the ACC. The winner will likely play Clemson for the ACC Championship, but the Jackets have already knocked them off once.

If they can get by Virginia Tech, could they do it again?

Frank Beamer has a knack for winning games that most do not expect, and he still has seven straight ten win seasons in his back pocket that should only grow.

VIRGINIA TECH 24, GEORGIA TECH 21

No. 2 Oklahoma State at Texas Tech: Noon ET ABC

2 of 11

Brandon Weeden has torched the Big 12 all season, and this may just be another in which the Cowboys offense puts up 40 plus points. However, it may be a trap game since Tommy Tuberville and the Red Raiders have nothing to lose.

If the Cowboys can continue to get by despite allowing 461 yards per game (110th) they simply may never lose. The defense has forced 31 turnovers, which leads the country.

Still, these early noon kick-off games have given the Cowboys some trouble in the past, and I can't say I would be shocked to see a major upset. Until they actually lose though, one cannot pick against the Pokes.

OKLAHOMA STATE 45, TEXAS TECH 31

Florida at No. 13 South Carolina-: Noon ET CBS

3 of 11

South Carolina suffered a decent sized loss to Arkansas last weekend, but they need to bounce back in a hurry in case Georgia loses a game. The Gamecocks can still have a shot at the SEC East though it is slim.

However, they will have their hands full with a Gators team that is hungry for a victory. Florida will seek revenge after losing to them at home last year, but this game may come down to the wire. Will John Brantley be able to make some plays against a ball hawking secondary?

South Carolina has intercepted 17 passes this season, which ranks third in the nation. Look for Brantley to throw one key pick in the closing moments to seal the victory for Spurrier.

No. 17 Michigan State at Iowa: Noon ET ESPN2

Sparty all of a sudden has a one game lead in their division, and they do not have many if any tough games remaining. That is outside of a trip to Kinnick Stadium against an Iowa team coming off a home upset over Michigan.

The Hawkeyes smoked the Spartans last year, will this season be any different? Kirk Cousins has struggled with pressure and the MSU offensive line has not played up to par in crucial road tests.

The biggest question remains if Iowa can get enough big plays to sustain drives? Against a legit Spartans defense, I look for another thrilling finish in Iowa City.

MICHIGAN STATE 24, IOWA 23

No. 19 Nebraska at No. 12 Penn State: 3:30 ET ABC

5 of 11

What a tumultuous week for Penn State!

They are still undefeated in the Big Ten, but will the players be ready to go against the Huskers? If Penn State wins this game they will have a shot at a possible Big Ten championship depending on what they do against the Buckeyes in Columbus.

However, we have Nebraska who can also play in the Big Ten championship since they have the tiebreaker over Michigan State. Will the Huskers be able to run against the stout run defense of Penn State?

The Nittany Lions allow 111 yards per game, which ranks 24th in the nation. Rex Burkhead and Taylor Martinez are quite the duo that are averaging 237 rushing yards per game. They will certainly test the Nittany Lion defense.

I have gone back and forth on this game, but now feel that Penn State will be unable to pull this one out.

NEBRASKA 21, PENN STATE 18

Miami FL at Florida State: 3:30 ET ABC/ESPN

6 of 11

The annual battle between the Noles and Canes has taken a hit the past few seasons, especially with no team ranked this season.

However, FSU is the hotter team out there, and they should be able to sneak by a tricky Miami team that will attempt to spoil the Seminoles hot stretch.

FLORIDA STATE 31, MIAMI 17

No. 20 Auburn at No. 15 Georgia: 3:30 ET CBS

7 of 11

The Bulldogs may be the hottest two loss team in the nation, and they now control their own destiny to reach the SEC Championship against LSU, more than likely.

However, the Bulldogs need to take on an Auburn squad that nobody is giving much respect to. The Tigers have the skill and speed to stay with UGA for at least a half, but Aaron Murray is way too good to let this game slip away.

Plus, the return of Isiah Crowell should give the team a much needed balance in the SEC.

GEORGIA 38, AUBURN 23

TCU at No. 5 Boise State: 3:30 ET VERSUS

8 of 11

The Broncos need a big victory if they expect to ever move up in the polls, especially since this is their toughest game of the year remaining.

Not only is the Mountain West title on the line, but Boise State could move up a spot or two with the possibility of Stanford losing.

College football is loaded with upsets as well, so who knows if Oklahoma State or Alabama will win on the road this weekend.

Still, the Broncos can still play in the Fiesta Bowl if they win out, and it will not be easy against an explosive TCU offense (averaging 451 YPG).

BOISE STATE 41, TCU 22

Tennessee at No. 8 Arkansas: 6 ET ESPN2

9 of 11

Tyler Wilson is scorching hot and some believe these Razorbacks could upset LSU on Thanksgiving weekend. They once upset the top ranked Bayou Bengals back in 2007, but they need to care of business against Tennessee first.

Some prognosticators are calling for a three way-tie in the SEC West which would likely come down to a head-to-head meeting with whoever ranks in the top two of the BCS Standings.

ARKANSAS 31, TENNESSEE 21

No. 3 Alabama at Mississippi State: 7:45 ET ESPN

10 of 11

Any chance the Crimson Tide fall on the road against the Bulldogs?

Alabama smoked them last season, but are coming off a devastating three point overtime loss. Nick Saban will not allow his team to mope around, so I would bank on a valiant defensive effort that limits any big plays.

Trent Richardson and Eddie Lacy will get a ton of carries and as long as AJ McCarron avoids turning the ball over, they will not choke this one away, though it should be close.

ALABAMA 23, MISSISSIPPI STATE 14

No. 7 Oregon at No. 4 Stanford

11 of 11

The Cardinal have their BCS National Championship dreams on the line in Palo Alto against a high potent Ducks offense.

They have battled through injuries and will be without Chris Owusu (concussion), but they still have the Heisman frontrunner in Andrew Luck. The game comes down to athletic ability and speed against strength and physical ability.

Can the Ducks gash the run defense of Stanford or will the Cardinal find a way to get by? If Luck does not turn it over at all, this game may come down to the final play.
