Penn State Scandal: Mike McQueary Faces a Bleak Future Due to Inactions

Richard LangfordNov 9, 2011

Life has become Mike McQueary's jail. He is about to permanently have nothing to distract him from his demons.

McQueary has been finding solace and distraction on the football field as a coach at Penn State, and he just became completely and utterly unemployable.

McQueary is the graduate assistant who allegedly walked in on Jerry Sandusky acting inappropriately with a young boy in the Penn State showers.

Instead of saying or doing something to stop the action he left, called his dad and later told Joe Paterno.

The perception that will be held of McQueary by the majority of people is summed up by the mother of the alleged victim in an article by Sarah Ganim of the Patriot-News:

“I don’t even have words to talk about the betrayal that I feel. [McQueary] was a grown man, and he saw a boy being sodomized ...He ran and called his daddy?”

This is going to lead to a lot of hate directed towards McQueary. This tweet sheds some insight into that:

McQueary's alleged inaction is impossible to understand. Here is a healthy young man who just finished a college football career, and instead of stopping something he knew was wrong, he left and sought advice.

Only he could answer what drove him to that decision. And it is something that he has undoubtedly spent hour after hour thinking about since then.

Mike's father John added some insight into the fact that this has indeed tormented his son. John McQueary as quoted by the USA Today:

"

The investigation has been going on for three years, and I've known for 10 years. This is about a child …That's what makes this tough on everyone.

"

That is 10 long years of self-doubt and regret. The only real break from that regret came on the football field that his dedication to protecting likely led him to his delusional inaction. His father also touched on this in the same article:

"

The only thing that's business as usual with any of this is when there's that short time frame where he's at practice. For those two hours on the practice field, that's the only time he's away from all of this.

"

That is a place of solace that McQueary is about to no longer have. The public doesn't want to see this man coach another game for Penn State this season.

This passionate sentiment means that McQueary's days as a coach are over. No one will ever hire him again.

If these allegations are true, McQueary brought this fate upon himself when he decided not to stop Jerry Sandusky. It was an inexcusable lack of action.

He is not facing any legal ramifications for this inaction, but he is certainly facing punishment, and that is a punishment with no end.
