Terell Owens: The Spotlight Hog

Daniel JohnsonDec 14, 2008

Whether it's because of his legs or his mouth, it is always a guarantee that you'll find Terell Owens on the front page of ESPN.  He cannot help it; that is just the nature of T.O.  He was born to be in the spotlight, and he will pretty much do or say anything to get the media's attention.

In Dallas thus far Owens has been making most of his news on the football field, which is good and bad news for Cowboys fans.  The good news is that it means that T.O. has been producing, so he has been relatively quiet.  The bad news is that it must mean trouble is brewing, as drama always follows Owens around.

Lately, Owens has not been the focal point of the offense as he was the past few seasons.  With the Cowboys struggling to hold onto a playoff spot and T.O. not making plays on the field, it was time for him to turn to the media once again.

After the Cowboys' excruciating loss in Pittsburgh last weekend, Owens spoke out against quarterback Tony Romo and tight end Jason Witten.  Romo and Witten are known to be close as they are roommates when the team travels on the road.

Owens claims that their friendship is the cause of his lack of production this season.  According to reports out of Valley Ranch, Owens believes that Romo and Witten hold private meetings to design offensive plays without Owens or any other other offensive players.

Owens' statements had become a huge distraction leading up to the Cowboys game tonight against the NFC East-leading New York Giants.  If there is anytime when this team does not need in-house distractions, this would be it.  The Cowboys' playoffs hopes are on the line, but that seems to be the furthest thing from everyone's minds this week.

Rumors swirling around the league say that Romo has finally had enough of Owens' antics and that his presence and distractions have caused Romo's poor play.  Who could blame him?  Terell Owens is one of those people that you can only take in small doses.  It seems like Romo has had more than enough of his fair share.

Even though everything seemed fine between the two in tonight's victory over the Giants, anything could happen over the course of the next few weeks.

Owens seems to be happy whenever he is winning, so for the Cowboys' sakes let's hope that continues to happen.  If Dallas makes the postseason look for the drama to die down, but if the Cowboys falter Owens could wreak havoc during a long winter at Valley Ranch.
