Why Al Golden Won't Leave the University of Miami for Penn State

Matthew OsborneNov 8, 2011

There has been some recent speculation as to whether current Miami Hurricanes head football coach Al Golden would bolt from the "U" to lead the Nittany Lions.

His name has been tossed around as a possible replacement, as with Urban Meyer, which has led to talks about Golden receiving a contract extension which would make him Miami's head honcho for the long haul.

Golden's agent, Brett Senior, insists that his client "isn't going anywhere" and that Golden is totally "committed to Miami."

Golden has shown that he is capable of holding a team together through turmoil.  He has been the glue that has bound this current 'Canes team, as well as the 2012 recruiting class.  Players have bought into his system and his ideologies.  They understand where the program is headed with Golden at the helm.

Which is why it wouldn't make sense for Golden to abandon ship.  Why would he leave one scandal for another?  While the latter holds no comparison to Miami's troubles, it would not be logical for Golden to simply start over, Penn State alumnus or not.

Golden has reiterated time after time that he is committed to Miami and will bring a National Championship back to Coral Gables.

However, Golden fits the mold that Penn State would want in a head coach.  On the outside, he presents that clean-cut, homegrown, all-American image--one who can mesmerize people with his words.

On the contrary, would Penn State be interested in hiring Golden as a replacement for Joe Paterno?  To an extent they might, but in their current situation, it may be best for the University to start from scratch.

That is, hire an Urban Meyer caliber coach who was never a Paterno disciple, someone who holds no ties to Penn State.  It may be in the University's best interest to distance themselves from anyone who was ever close to Joe Pa.

This, in my opinion, is why Golden will stay put in Coral Gables...at least until his contract has expired or if/when he wins a National Championship.

For the time being, Golden will be the face of the "U."  If he were to head to State College, it would contradict everything that he stands for.  His image would be tarnished and he would be branded a deserter, and it is almost guaranteed that he would never be welcomed down south again.
