There is really no easy way to discuss the heinous situation unfolding at Penn State. With the help of the great Jeff Passan of Yahoo, I do my best. This story is and always should be about the victims, but it has become as much about Joe Paterno as anyone, especially in light of Paterno's press conference being cancelled and reports via the New York Times that trustees are trying to work on a way to get the suddenly-embattled legend out of Happy Valley as soon as possible.
Passan and I talk about all sides of this story, including how the university has handled the public relations nightmare and how we, as sports media, have handled the story. Mostly, we try to wrap our heads around what happened over the last 15 years and how so many people at Penn State knew about this—had to know about this—and did nothing but pretend like it wasn't real.
We are just learning about this now, but some of those involved have been keeping this quiet for years. How can people look themselves in the mirror every morning? How can people still work there?
Look, Passan and I both have kids, and both have life experiences that shape who we are as people. Our thoughts are unquestionably personal to us, and we hope that we've done as reasonable a job as possible trying to parse the information we have at the time. We know there will be more to this story, and it's important to shine as big a light on the wrongdoings as possible, if only to make sure it never happens again, anywhere.
We appreciate your thoughts in the comments, and thanks for listening.
