NFL Power Rankings Week 10: Looking at Which Wins Lifted Teams Most

John RozumNov 8, 2011

Anytime you can get a win in pro football only good can come out of it, now how good is another issue.

That being said, Week 9 in the NFL had some big games that really began to clear the air on some of the pretenders and contenders.

However, some benefited more from a win than others. So, here are the three teams who got the biggest lift from victory last week.

Baltimore Ravens (6-2)

It's been a while since the Ravens swept the Pittsburgh Steelers in the regular season (2006 season), which coincidentally is the last time Baltimore won the AFC North division title.

Also, you can definitely make the argument that Baltimore is the current AFC title front-runner, as they have wins over the Texans and Jets. And with a rather favorable remaining schedule, the Ravens should finish no worse than 11-5 and earn the AFC's top seed.

With a top-five defense and an offense that's good enough to put up just enough points and move the ball methodically, there's no reason why Baltimore shouldn't enter the postseason as the AFC favorite.

San Francisco 49ers (7-1)

The scary thing about San Francisco is they may be 7-1 and play in the NFL's weakest division, but they've only played one divisional game so far.

The 49ers have road wins over Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Detroit and Washington. None of which are easy places to win regardless of records and with five divisional games remaining, San Fran could very well challenge Green Bay for the top seed.

The year 1998 was arguably the strongest year for the NFC heading into the playoffs.

The No. 1 seed was Minnesota at 15-1 and Atlanta was the No. 2 seed at 14-2. This season, the NFC could possibly have the same result between the Packers and 'Niners, which would be awesome for those loving the renewal of old rivalries.

In addition, don't be surprised if San Francisco steals the No. 1 seed over Green Bay as the 49ers have an easier schedule remaining.

Chicago Bears (5-3)

Don't look now...okay you can look, but the Chicago Bears are in the NFC playoff picture. If the season were to end today, Chicago would get the No. 6 seed over Atlanta because of the head-to-head tiebreaker win.

See, winning in Week 1 does matter.

Anyway, the Bears sit just one game back of Detroit after their win over Philly on Monday, and with the Lions coming into The Windy City this week, there's quite a bit at stake.

The Bears may also appear to be inconsistent, however, when you look at who they've lost to (Green Bay, New Orleans and Detroit), it's clear that Chicago is much better than given credit for.

In turn, Chicago is simply a really good team playing a really good schedule, but the Bears are beating teams who they are definitely better than, straight up.
