Joe Paterno Press Conference Cancelled: PSU Officials Drop the Ball Yet Again
The much-awaited weekly Joe Paterno press conference has been canceled. There wasn't a whole lot of explanation for the cancellation, but the members of the media were handed this:
""Due to the ongoing legal circumstances centered around the recent allegations and charges, we have determined that today's press conference cannot be held and will not be re-scheduled."
"
Well, there you go. Just like that, the press conference is canceled. The decision, according to ESPN, apparently came down from President Graham Spanier's office.
I understand what Penn State officials were trying to do by calling off this press conference, but how can this really help?
Did they really think, "Oh, if we cancel it, all our problems will go away?"
Did they really think, "Maybe people will start forgetting about the scandal if we just don't talk to them?"
Did they really think, "The best way to fix this huge, monumental problem is to not answer questions and act like we have even more things to hide?"
Whatever their thought process was for canceling Paterno's press conference, it wasn't the right one. I mean, Paterno wasn't even going to be allowed to answer any questions about the ongoing scandal and investigation. He was only going to be allowed to answer football questions, and if media asked him about anything else, they would be shut down.
I get what President Spanier was trying to do with this cancellation; but nonetheless, it was a stupid move.
