Mike McQueary: Who Is He and Why Is He Important to Penn State Scandal?

Alex KayNov 8, 2011

You may know Mike McQueary as the fiery redhead who is always shouting on the sidelines and seemed to be the go-to guy for a Penn State reaction shot from the cameras when Joe Paterno was coaching from the booth.

Well, McQueary is now much more than that nameless assistant coach from earlier in the season. He is the eyewitness who saw Jerry Sandusky sexually assault a young man.

"

According to the Grand Jury Report on Jerry Sandusky, a then 28-year-old graduate assistant coach “heard slapping sounds. He believed the sounds to be those of sexual activity. As the graduate assistant put the sneakers in his locker, he looked into the shower.

He saw a naked boy, Victim 2, whose age he estimated to be ten years old, with his hands up against the wall, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky.”

That assistant coach has been named by sources as McQueary, whose age matches up with the testimony given and makes sense that he would be in the locker room at that date and time to put on new shoes and get recruiting tape.

McQueary has been on Joe Paterno’s staff since 2000 and played for him and Sandusky from 1994-1997 as a quarterback.

After witnessing the act happen, McQueary immediately phoned his father and went home to talk about what he had seen. The two decided he must inform his superior, Paterno, and that is exactly what he did.

He then met with Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, the respective athletic director and VP of the school at the time, to inform them of exactly what he saw.

While Curley and Schultz are disputing this fact and said the anal intercourse was described as horsing around, the issue remains that they were informed of Sandusky and a young male in the showers of the Penn State Nittany Lions football team.

Why this wasn’t reported to authorities is disgusting and beyond me.

McQueary should have monitored the situation more closely and went beyond the Penn State walls to report what he saw. How could he live with himself knowing that Sandusky was still lingering around campus, unpunished, after what he saw?

I believe that McQueary will resign along with Paterno and many other members of the staff this week.

His time in Happy Valley, his hometown, is coming to a disgraceful end.
